Purty Pewter Pitcher Purchase

"OK, OK, I'm going as fast as I don't want to go!"
I've got a box of old stuff like that to melt down, just hate to do it but oh well . . . It's just metal.

I love your post title! Very catchy!

that's a fancy one.
the one i just snagged was being used as a flower pot, into the pile it went.
i probably don't need any more tin, but for 50 cents who is gonna argue?

I have a lot of pewter as well. Some is pretty nice and won't be used unless absolutely necessary. I have a steady source of pure tin from work, so I may never melt down the pewter.

That's a nice piece, I'd probably keep that on display someplace.

Indeed. I am a thoughtful guy, and I don’t take lightly melting down to send down range objects of beauty that gave previous owners beauty and pleasure in their homes. I take a moment as I see their precious objects sagging into my melt, the importance that they once held to others.

At large, whereabouts unknown.
I was at a large indoor garage sale a few years back and saw a similar pitcher with a tea set and tried to buy it. I launched into the negotiations pretty low to see where bottom dollar was. I was down to around twenty dollars and set to close the deal when a friend walked up and said "the whole set should go well over 5 lbs". The seller realized her priceless antique was about to be scrapped and removed it from sale. Of course it was neither priceless of antique, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So I hit up the Goodwill on the way home and bought a bunch of pewter trinkets instead. There, the truth is out. I killed Obi Wan, and a bunch of Storm Troopers.

Brad, don't tell Dawn.

I got a small bunch if mugs plates and decanters years ago but have t seen since. Local shops simply never see it here. Or someone else scoops it long before it sees shelfs.

To those with granddaughters. If Grandma and Grandaughters are having a tea party, those tea sets are to depart your pewter box and never be seen again! It’s also not a good idea to try to claim them again once the kids leave, unless you like getting the “ bad eye”.

I don’t look for or buy pewter. I must not have ringing in the ears

A few years ago, I found an odd piece at a Salvation Army store, cost about a buck, must weight a pound and a half. Kind of looked like a fancy mess kit so I was curious, turned out to be a hot water plate, the plate held food which was also a pretty tight lid to the lower portion which apparently was supposed to hold boiled water to keep the food warm. Dug around a bit and found one like it on a collectors site, same hall mark, early 1800s vintage and the one on the site was priced at a couple of hundered as I recall. Not naive enough to believe I could get that for it, but I seem to have found enough pewter glass bottomed mugs and such given for retirement gifts and things which I won't mind melting down, I'll hang nto the hot water plate.

I passed by a fairly large pewter basket type of thing the other day, good price, just have a lot of it now and a steady supply of tin. I definitely wouldn't melt down nice stuff like the pictured tea pot.

So much scrap pewter around, I don’t buy any of the nice quality pieces. Soup ladles are my favorites.
