.300 Blackout?

Dad had a love affair with those .30 Carbine revolvers and I inherited one along with a lot of loading infrastructure for it. I imagine it would be a hot number with factory level loads, but I've been loading it like a .32 and it's fun, but I haven't done much with it. It isn't something I would have ever bought for myself, but since I have it...

Sure is a big pistol for that small round. I think mine is actually on a Super Blackhawk frame, dang it's big.

Just a PSA: don't buy the single shoot kit for the Ruger Ranch it would have to be improved to suck. It may work better with a .308 Winchester but with 300 Blackout it hard just to get the round in the chamber.

I have shot 950 rounds out of that rifle and the Struggle has been Real. ;)

I bought a used Ruger ranch 300bo last weekend. Didn't shoot it, just cleaned the bore with ed's red, oiled it and put it away.
Looking at quickload, it appears any pistol /shotgun powder would be suitable for heavy subs. I've got vectan ba10, a little red dot, hs6, h.universal clays, unique, 296/110, 1680, and lilgun.. (Yep, too many commas.) I ordered some makers 190 and 200gr. I also have some discontinued 225 gr Hornady. As far as quiet goes, it seems to me that the fastest powders would be a good idea.
All input welcome.

I've shot many more small game/varmint/vermin with something on the order of a 32-20 than I've ever shot with a 22 LR or shotgun, and not because I've never used a 22 or shotgun. Each is wonderful and covers a LOT of applications, but I've found the centerfire 30s and 35s to be more versatile by a long cry. My shotgun hangs idle, waiting for bipedal intrusions and I don't even own a 22 any more.

The 35s, particularly the 357 Mag CAN be employed well outside of its originally intended purpose, from squirrel to deer and back to personal defense AND has the benefit of compatibility with a "reasonable" handgun. I say "reasonable," because my best friend would argue that his 458 Lott Encore pistol is compatible with an African hunting rifle.

I ruled out the 300 BLK as my own ONE 30 caliber rifle, in deference to the 30/30, which also beat the 7.62x39 - for ME. The 300 BLK, as well as the 7.62x39 both provide a lot of latitude in application and DO each have their shortcomings, but so does the 30/30, the 357, 22 LR and shotgun. I definitely wouldn't write off the BLK as useless, at least no sooner than I would the 32-20, but one picks and chooses one's own compromises for one's own situation, likes, dislikes, etc.

Once I got serious about the probability v. possibility of certain situations, I was able to determine my own perfect combination of compromises in cartridges and arms.

It all IS nutritious fodder for intelligent discussion regardless. Keeps the brain busy working on constructive and productive things.

To split a hair or two here, I'm not an AR guy, but am a big fan of the CZ 527 and what fits into an AR usually fits into a 527. Can't put a 30/30 in a 527. My "main" long-arms in my battery are neither, rather Contender Carbines, so MY long-arm of choice would be no shorter or lighter if it were a 300 BLK, so it's a 30/30. No sense hobbling myself (even if just a little) with a smaller case when the larger case does so well with small charges AND offers a bit more punch on the top end/heavier bullets. AND, I just love that long neck and big rim, subjective though those points might seem.

Per my cousin, using Maker bullets for subs in the RARR, Lil Gun is the powder for accuracy and was the recommendation from the folks at Maker.

Lil gun burns very hot. Is prone to pressure spikes. Its for those "younger" loaders who eel the need top velocity in everything.

IMHO, with Jacketed you can do everything needed in with caliber with two classes of powder.

H110/296 & 1680/cfe-BLK

There are many powders that can do same and some carry good arguments. One of my best accurate loads is a 150g Hornady hunting bullet and IMR4227.

Cast I also like 2400 and Unique and H335 and 3031. But not all in a repeater. I haven't been able to attain the accuracy if jacketed in the lil 300.

try about 4 grs of red-dot or the like with anything 180-200grs.
i run 3.5 of 700-X in my bolt gun with a 230 LEE, but i have a 7 twist.
in the Ruger i run something more like 140 or 165 with a click more 700-X, or with AA#9 for about 1500 fps.
the rcbs silh. bullet works in both guns with AA#-9 but it isn't quiet, accurate, but not quiet, it's more like shooting slow 308 loads.

Got home feeling exhausted this evening and furthered that feeling with a couple or more glasses of merlot. Not even going to put together dummy loads to see what fits in the rarr tonight. Tomorrow morning sounds better. Ql doesn't list the makers bullets, so I'm using barnes tsx data after adjusting seating depth. I have more red dot than I thought, probably 1/4 lb. For muzzle pressure, it looks like the winner for being vewy vewy quiet.
I'll start with dummies in the morning to see if they'll chamber ok and go from there. Second Sunday's are the muzzle loader shoots, so no range time tomorrow. I'll load tomorrow morning and hit the range early Monday morning before going to the west side to start making deliveries. This stupid suppressor thing is the first time I've gotten excited about shooting in a couple years.

I think I already know the answer to this question, but since I'm using a small case, fast powders, etc. spp would be appropriate rather than sr or srm primers?

SR seems to work the best for me when i'm using the least amount of powder possible.
you need a click more powder with the SP's to get the same results.
