Well I cut down a 348 case to 1.595 then sized the neck with a 45 then a 44 spl sizer die. The rim fits great, the body is large even after running the case into the 348 FL sizer die. I used my drill press to spin the case to reduce diameter from.553 to .542 which still a bit to large. I can tap it in but the 8 mm Lebel looks to be a better fit.
The 8mm Lebel rim is .621 compared to the 348 at .610. It looks like the Lebel rim will work fine. The body of the Lebel is .536 which looks like a good fit.
There doesn’t seem to be any step into the bore. The casting doesn’t show any. I still haven’t looked with the bore scope yet.

Graf & Sons has Lebel brass in stock so I think I’ll place an order. I will slug the bore first to see about sizers and molds

Well the the bore slugs out to .418. So I’m looking for a mold .420 or so between 200 and 300 grains. NOE has sizers and expanders in stock.

That is a handsome target / stalking rifle ! I would not be surprised if it was carried through the Bavarian forest searching out Stag and those huge bores we used to see.

I use 8mm Lebel for one rifle and 348 for the other
my 1878 Vetterli has a .440 Groove, and .430 bore, I have been using Lyman .43 Spanish bullet
the 1881 has a tighter bore and chamber, had to machine the base down about .005 to fit the chamber, use .430 bulllets

I have 3 NEI moulds for the .416's - 418 290, 418 330, and 418 375. All are gas check moulds. I can cast and send some, either plain or sized. I would have to look and see which sizers I have. I know these are considerably heavier than you are looking for, but let me know if any would be worth trying.

I bet that these bullets gas checked, powder coated (to increase the diameter just a bit, if they drop from the mold at .418”), and then sized to .419” would probably be just the ticket.

Actually the 290 & 330 would be in the ballpark of what this cartridge was slinging. As Jushua says a little PC could easily bump it up to .420 - .421 area. I’m going to recast the chamber today if time allows as the casting my brother made 20 years ago isn’t reality any more, so just got to look up the timing instructions for measuring cerrosafe.
But I may want to take you up on your offer. I would want any as cast so I could size or powder coat as needed for a good fit.

I’ve emailed Jared at Arsenal with a question about bumping the diameter from .418 to .420, 2 cavity aluminum which I know he will do, but I want it a plain base rather then a gas check. Haven’t heard back yet.

Jared is very accommodating and makes a really nice mold at a good price

I’m going to cut a 348 Winchester case down to about 1/2 so I put my tubing ball mic on it to see just how thick the brass really is and how far I can safely “thin” it. But the Lebel brass looks like a good candidate and could be much less fuss.
