After reading up on this caliber, and finally picking up a new toy = Ruger American Rimfire. It is a kick in the pants!!! Fun, accurate caliber out to 100yards easy for game, and out to 200 for varmint. Anyone else play around with the 17??

Yes, I have a CZ455 American, which is a switch-barrel rimfire. The HMR barrel is very accurate, great fun! In the summer, there are quite a lot of flowers at the 100m berm of my range. I don’t use the HMR much for hunting, these days- but it is great for «picking» flowers at 100m!

Have one in a Sav that does great work on prairie dogs out to 150 and maybe a bit beyond.
Fun rifle! not good in much wind, great on a calm day.

K-Hornet alluded to my only objection to the 17 HMR--wind sensitivity. That is a huge issue in the deserts where I do most of my hunting, the winds stop blowing for about 15-20 minutes each month, usually after dark. Yeah, it's an exaggeration--but a slight one.

On the positive side of the caliber's ledger, it and the 22 WMR remained readily available in Ridgecrest during the entire time that 22 LR was unobtainium. Neither caliber is what you could call "cheap", but there are times I want to whack rats and NOT want to chase down brass for refilling. If I was truly a lazy varmint hunter, I could do about half of my rat and song dog strafing with a rimfire.

The 17 HMR is quite effective on little critters and coyotes to about 150 yards. I didn't try many shots past that distance, owing to wind. Having 22 Hornets, 223 Rems, and 22-250s along at the same time on rat hunts spoils you rotten. A couple I know north of Bishop LOVE the 17 HMR for rockchuck shooting in the White Mountains. They call my 22-250s "Al's Howitzers". Being non-reloaders, they are somewhat unenlightened, but still are nice people. Her elk chile colorado must be tasted to be believed.

I consider the .17 HMR to be the perfect little varmint gun. Crows hate it. Super accurate in the Savages I've owned.

Funny I went backwards on 17’s. 17 Remington,17 Hornet,17WSM, 17 Fireball.
Now the 17HMR. Just picked it up this week,ISSC SPA rifle. It’s a straight pull biathlon type rifle. Reviews are so so, but they are several years old, with no update.

Now to get glass mounted on it and see how it runs.
