You're exactly right.
You don't need a 338 Win. Mag to kill a 120 lb. white tail deer at 60 yards.

that's for sure.
the X57 really shines out to 250yds in the field.
the 0-6 family takes over from there for maybe another 75-100 yds.
after that you have to start figuring in drops and the wind too much, especially off a tree branch or a rock and a magnum then becomes a lot handier.

if all of my shots were 100yds and under ohh man the cartridges and rifles I'd be using.
that old 8mm Lebel Remington conversion, the 351 Winchester, the 44-40 would come out....

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
You take Joe Sixpack and hand him a Super Magnum Whiz Bang rifle and tell him to hit a 6" gong at an undetermined yardage with a 10-15 mph crosswind and make sure it's more than 250 yards out and Joe is going to miss 8 shots out of 10 on a good day. I'm not a fan of the Hail Mary shooters at all.

Nice rifle Ben.
Always been fan of the 7x57. I loaded for my Father in Laws bubba sporterized small ring 40 years ago. In fact, my m51-L JC Higgins was traded for with the idea of building one. The lightweight HVA small ring modified Mauser would be about perfect except for the fact that it shoots too good as a 308.

PO Ackley was asked to name the best deer cartridge of all and the 7x57 was his pick. I like everything about yours, especially the left side safety. I would only change the scope to a fixed 6x- but that's just me. Beautiful.
