Being I have almost 2 lbs of alliant 2400 powder. I want to use it up. In my 1892 repro Winchester i use 18 grains behind a 250 grain lubes cast Lyman bullet. Excellent power but does not punish. Very good accuracy at 50 yards. I have shot a possum. A skunk and a woodchuck with this load. Bad news for the varmints.

2400 is a classic and usually very good for cast bullets.
I use Unique mostly. (Cast). Its never let me down. My newest 45 mold Hasnt liked unique yet. But I have a ladder built from 7.5 up and Im sure it will Like Something! I also like Blue Dot. Many like Red and Green dot and I have a bunch of Herco I really aighta work Up a load with that!!

But by all means try that 2400!

the 92 doesn't come in 45-70.
it does come in 45 colt though.
the 86 looks like an over sized model 92 [so does the 71 only kinda crossed with a 73] and handles the 45-70 no problem.

I could get by, reloading most of my cast bullet calibers, with just 2400. I purchase it by the 8 pound jug. I get nervous when it gets down to around half a jug. Then it's time to buy another. For non magnum cast loads, my go to powder is Unique. Also purchased in a 8 #er.

I like the 2400 powder because I have 2 lbs. Some people don't like it because of residue left in the barrel. I dont have any trouble with clean-up and thanks for all the responses

All of the new powders are less expensive to make than the old IMR and double based ones. There is less hazardous waste from the process and the new chemistry of deterrent coatings and burn point modifiers just make it more profitable. Like "deepthroat" said, "Follow the money".

Seem to remember the IMR 4759 when it was last discontinued as not fitting in with the new manufacturing methods and very possibly being more expensive to make. Yep follow the money. Frank

I will soon be sitting on over 20# of 2400.

It is far and away my favorite cast bullet rifle powder.
