Can't offer anything except encouragement, seems like .30 caliber stuff is more popular than the 7mms. But I would expect that a cartridge based on the -06 case would be a good cast bullet platform. Hope you have some success, keep us informed about your efforts.

Virgin both counts I'm .308 I have a 18 year old nephew who has the hunting bug real bad. he insisted on the .280 in mod 70 . hoping to fast track with a .280 caster the kid needs shooting experience to shoot offhand and needs to shoot lots.

Generic data here....

Large case capacity isn't the problem with cast that some folks make it out to be.Sort if like the base of a CB down in the case below neck.

I've found, possibly dumb luck? that large capacity cases do a fine job with well fitted nose/throat loads, pert near irrespective of pressure and velocity.I mean,if you do any research at all the notion of "fit" keeps coming up.But,IMO .... the ball goes flat so to speak when discussing "why".Just sayin, get that fit right not only increases acc,it also widens the window of acceptance WRT purty much everything else CB'ly speaking.

Lube requirements go down, case capacity, alloy, pressure, powder viability and a cpl other salient points. So,it's not a broken record..... work on getting tuned, base to ogive consistency. Work on precision OAL cartridge length.Really snuggle that CB up into WHATEVER throat you got.

If I had to put a number on how hard a "jam" ,maybe 1 outta 10? rounds jacked up outta the mag(if we're looking at repeaters) are sticking, requiring a bit of bolt force to extract a loaded round. That % is part of the fun.Sayin, that's just another aspect of fit. We're looking for jam, perfect T.I.R.,then work on low chrono numbers and nice small round groups.

I love my .280 Remington.
All I've ever shot out of mine is cast bullets.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Probably one of the best medium to large game rounds ever designed. In a good rifle it's right on the heels of the 7Mag without the downsides (erosion). It will do anything the 30-06 will do with modern bullets. I'd rather see 95% of the guys out there toting 300 Mall Ninja Magnums, etc., switch to a 7x57 or 280 with a scope of no more than 4 power. We'd have a lot less fat coyotes up here and a lot fewer guys terrified of their rifles.

With cast twist will be an interesting to see how it plays out . 280s have been found with 8.5,9.5,& a rare 11" twist . How I would love an 11 !
2100 is about all I can get out of the 9.5s naked but a .278 paper patched up to .286 will go 2400 fps with all the pressure you want on it . That would get you very close to the 175s .
The above was with a 7 RWH ( 7x6.8SPC ) I'm yet to have a good enough 7×57 to wringe out but I do have a Savage barrel and 280 finish reamer .

Bertram:

Get yourself Lyman's "Cast Bullet Handbook, 4th edition". It is full of casting information along with 25 loads for the .280 Remington. Chances are that most of the answers to your questions can be found there. If you want to go further, "Cast Bullets for Beginners and Experts", available from the "Cast Bullet Association." Books are wonderful things.

I absolutely love the 7mm’s. I have a 280 that has harvested quite a few deer. Went to a 7mm RM and while I like it kept going back to the 280. About 2 years ago I had a 280 AI built. That rifle is a machine! No cast in mine but I’m leaning in that direction for my 280 just to shoot it more. Both my 280 & 280 AI love IMR 4831.

if your just looking to get him some trigger time, Ben's load is a good one.
either of the rcbs 7mm molds [145 & 168] sized to .286 [checked and lubed] on top of 16-17grs of Alliant's 2400, with a large rifle primer is going to do a good job also.
it's super simple to make up a bunch, and all you need for an alloy is ww's with a little tin thrown in or anything you can scrounge and mix to approximate 10-ish BHN

Caution this stuff is addictive.
