300 Savage to .358 Win.

So I have a Rem 722 in the safe that is currently a 300 Savage. It's a slick little bolt gun with a great trigger in a full Mannlicher stock with a Weaver K4 scope.
I have always thought a 358 Win would be a super fun and useful cast bullet cartridge. Not really being a fan of the 300 Sav. I thought this rifle might be a good candidate for a rebore from Jes. He is 40 miles down the road from me.

My question to those who know is this. Please explain the plus and minus of 3vs 4vs 5groove rifling. Obviously this will be a cast only rifle.

Nice Rifle, waco! You will love the 358 Win as a cast bullet rifle. I love my JES rebore to .358 Win. I have the 3 groove …shoots excellent. Can't really explain the differences but I'm sure someone here will

Saeco #248. [250grs.]
water dropped ww alloy and enough RL-19 to make your eyes water with each trigger pull or somewhere near 50 grs.
1-12 twist.

Ben has a couple of Jes's rifles I think 1-2 have a 3 groove.
I would go 4 groove,, just cause.

12 twist and a 4 groove huh?
What are the popular bullet weights for this caliber?
200-250? Heavier?

My .35 Whelen Ruger #1 is a JES rebore 5 groove with a 1 in 13" twist.

My Remington 788 in .38-55 is a JES rebore. It's a 5 groove as well with 1 in 15" twist

Both shoot way better than they have a right too!!

But then waco....... I don't remember hearing any JES rebore with any number of grooves that didn't shoot!

200gr. noe and the noe copy(360009) of the lyman 358009, because they pour at .360 plus with straight ww.
The Saeco Fiver mentioned and the noe 230 gr. JW mentioned are all very accurate 35 cal. bullets.

That’s a very nice looking rifle you have there. Nice looking grain in the stock too.
I’m betting you’ll find loads that easily break an inch at 100yds. with any of those bullets in 12 to 14 twist.

Thanks 35 Shooter. I swiped that from LGS for $220 plus the $10 background check.

Let me know if you have it rebored and I can send you some bullets to try.

I’ve been wanting to have a rifle rebored to 358 win or 35 whelen for a while. Just need to find a donor rifle.

That rem 722 looks great. I love Mannlicher stocks.

I have had Santa Barbara 98 with an A&B 1-14 24" .
It shot under an inch @2100 fps with an unkown alloy 35-250 RCBS .
I have a pair of 6C Lee 358-200s one of them is MIA . I shot a few over Unique with similar results .

I don't know that there is a huge difference in 3-5 grooves with cast .
I don't know if Jess is sticking with the Ballardesk square 1-2 land to groove width or if he has an alternate type available . I have a 5R that is both fast and accurate with about 20% of the barrel surface in lands .
His 3 groove is about 3-1 groove to land . They should be faster .

Lyman 358009 is hands down the classic bullet for .358 Win. and you can drive it plenty fast if you want to hunt with it. NOE makes an equivalent mold. I have the NOE 230 grain FP and the big old thumper but haven't done much fooling with them yet.

I hunt with 250 Hornady roundnose at max 2015BR, the 358009 shoots to the sights at 50 yards using 12.0 Unique. Makes a good small game/camp meat load.

If you would like to try for yourself PM me and I will send you some to try.

I have a JES 3-groove 35 Whelen that shoots very well with the SAECO and the '009. Both shoot better than the 200 grainers.

Chris,

I use that same 12 gr. Unique load with that bullet.
It chronoed at 1275 FPS. From my 1/14 twist encore35 whelen, and will break an inch easily at 100 yds. with weighed bullets.
I absolutely love that bullet and that particular load.
I run it at 2200plus FPS. For deer hunting with imr 4350, but that’s overkill lol.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I have the 35 Bator, a sort of 358009. Shoots fine in my Whelen 03/A3. My rebore is a 4 groove by an unknown smith. For most things, like deer and smaller, the RCBS 35-200 is a great design in off the shelf moulds. Shoots good in anything I've ever used it in. Truthfully the 358/35 Whelen, and to a lesser extent the 35 Rem, are fine with anything that will chamber. They just seem to want to shoot IME.
