Ok, you have to show us the rifle better and tell us what we are looking at. Looks like an integral suppressor?

It's friggin' omg stupid quiet. It just makes a weak little "puttt" noise about as loud as the lock, which isn't very loud either. Stuck the chrono on it to keep him honest and it was mid nine hundreds, I guessed closer to six hundred by the sound.

My 10" can has a high-pitched "tink" noise to it that makes it noticeably louder than L1A1's, about like a Benjamin .22-caliber pellet rifle.

Most impressive indeed!

I volunteer to shoot but, not carry it.

It started life as a large ring Mauser (VZ-24). It was re-barreled in 308 for this integral build. Rifling is four lans and grooves with 9.5:1 twist. The bolt was cut and a new one welded on in the turned down position. Safety is a 3-position Side Swing Gentry and the trigger is a Timney. Had trouble getting this action working properly so I called the number on the Timney package and spoke with Mr. Timney himself ! Sent it to him and he custom fit a new cocking peace to make it all work correctly.

I did a bit of watching of videos and reading of books about getting the most out of the old Mauser's and it seems to have worked. The receiver was trued along with the bolt face and the lugs were lapped in. The rails were also sanded and polished before DuraCoating. Oh, the mag follower had to have a bit taken off the front and a spacer block installed to keep these shorter 308 rounds lined up and feeding properly. The stock was a 98% fit stock from Richards micro fit IIRC.

I think that's about it. It was built a long time back. I don't think I've shot it for a number of years. I really appreciate Ian's hospitality (and kind words) in letting me take the old girl out. I've actually got an old Pelican 1750 case to lug it around in, that's the long case with the wheels on it. :D

Here's a short vid of my shooting it back in Corpus: http://s79.photobucket.com/user/L1A1Rocker/media/sup308.mp4.html

OMG! In the video it sounds like dry firing.

What an awesome rifle

You don't realize how loud bullet impacts are until you hear a shot from something like "Big Burtha".

One of the several times I was on an internet research kick about quieting shooting ranges the thing about bullet flight noise and bullet impact noise kept coming up. Even if you get the muzzle and bullet flight quiet you still have to deal with the backstop to control the total noise of firing the shot.

I saw a video a while back where they were shooting supers in a suppressed rifle with a decibel meter at both the rifle and a hog carcass . The various loads were from 110-130 dB but the impacts were +- 2 of 150 dB .

After lapping the bases to the receiver, installing them, and going through my spare scope drawer last Sunday evening I gave up and ordered a brand-new Weaver 40/44 3x9x40, which came in yesterday. Just got it mounted and bore-sighted, so I'll be checking the 6.0 Titegroup load out for longer-range accuracy and stability tomorrow.

My 3030 has a 3x9 it will hold moa at 50yd. I bet you'll do great with it.
Mine were in uniformed but, mixed brass. Didn't cull or sort the boolits either.

Well, I'm surprised. This damn thing shoots better than any other rifle I own at 50 yards. After two shots and two minor scope adjustments I put three in the same hole, like a 1/8" group, maybe a little smaller. Then I tested the QD mount by removing and re-installing the scope and shot two more groups, got a slight POI shift and an odd high flyer in the next group for about 3/4" but the core was again a cluster in the same basic hole. If I bothered to actually weight sort any of these to cull the ones with the hidden base voids I bet it would be solid. I'd have been pretty happy with 1" at 50, but this is unprecedented. Not bad for a 235-grain torpedo at 940 fps out of a 1-in-10" twist, suppressed .308.

And now you see why I love titegroup.

Thanks for sharing your results. You sure can't be mad about those results.

I appreciate you sharing your experience with Titegroup and your .30-30, that helped point me in a good direction and I basically was able to get a solid keeper load where no real published data existed in only 20 rounds. Actually had it after eight rounds, but had to run the gamut to make sure and check powder position sensitivity anyway.

No problems. I'm just happy it worked for ya. Wouldn't have recommended it to folks who don't understand how to do it. I had a sneaking suspicion you'd find joy safely. Learned a lot from your trials over the years.

I still need to cull a batch better and stretch the ranges a bit. Lots of potential there as a good varmint load in my case. If it would hold out to 200 or more I'd be extra happy.

I have been shooting subsonic cast for about 10yrs. I have tried lots of powders on the fast side of AR2205 (IMR4227) inclusive. I'm about to start with an Omark 308 target rifle for some sub cast 50m target work on the 50m ISSF target. Should be fun! I have a 200gn CBE bullet, and about 6 powders to play with.
