35/30 amazes me

John,
I do have one 94AE, bought it from the Win/USRAC Rep more then 30yrs ago. It's a .44Mag with a 20inch bbl. They were a Special Production Run for the BIG 5 Sporting Goods chain. Which also happens to also be the largest retailer of footwear in the State. Weird

The 94AE in .44Mag has a .429dia bbl and a long throat. So it will chamber the #429421 But won't feed it from the magazine, too long. Still it shoots very accurately. Scoped it when I got it. Put 5rds of the #429244GC into 2 1/4" at 100yrds, once. Otherwise it's 2 3/4 -3" at 100yrds.
Of course those were 35year eyes.

Never malfunctioned once. Only bullet the won't feed are the Keith SWC from either Lyman or RCBS, just too long.

My favorite bullets are the Lyman #429244GC, #429667 or N.O.E. 432-240-RF, a TL design. That last is FANTASTIC, either tumble-lube 45/45/10 from WLL or PC'ed with Eastwood Squirrel Grey.
And My Cowboy Shooting Buddy can get 10 rounds into his Win 94AE Trapper, when seated to crimp on the ogive.

Walks,
Yeah the 44 mag in a lever is a nice set up. Loaded hot with the right bullet will work on about anything going. when loaded with light loads its a fun can roller, or whats another fun target is golf balls. Golf balls are sometimes easier with a rifle then a golf club.
I have a 92 Browning and a Rossi 16" for the Winchester feel, and a Marlin 94. The Browning gets most of the attention as it's well made and feels right. I've been starting some loading the 310 grain SSK Sledge Hammer slugs in 44 Spl cases. They feed perfect where the same bullet in the mag case is to long. Also have a NOE 432-278 that looks good. I'm thinking about 280 to 290 grains would be about right in the 44 carbine.
Just to drift back to the OP of this thread, I have 4 - 30-30's that are just right as 30-30's and are not considered for conversion to 35/30-30. That's the reason why I'm hunt for the next 94 for a conversion to either a 35/30-30 or 38-55. It's all good fun to put a non standard cartridge together and put together the brass, bullets and make it function hopefully satisfactorily enough to justify the expense.

Ok lighten up you guys.
I'm not going to pay $199 for 35/30-30 dies when I can buy 38-55 dies for $32.99.
While a 35/30-30 would be fun, I'm looking at the bottom line for a project. I can't do both, so, cost of the Jess rebore and the end price needs to be considered, which includes reloading equipment.
So quit picking on a poor boy.

There is nothing wrong with a Mod 94 in 38-55 at all. Matter of fact it is very good idea.
199 bucks for dies would make me stop and think a bit too.

And that from a guy who bought a lathe and mill to not pay for bullet size dies......

look I have a ton of bucks in a 50 Alaskan so the 35/30-30 would be a deal by comparison.
The dies are out of line but a guy could use alternative dies to get the job done.

Just wanted to poke back a bit.

I do like the idea of have a rebore where you can get a bore of your choosing, .375, .376, .377. That appeals to me.

If I had to justify the expense of guns I would only have my 1917 30-06, Remington mo 12 - 22 LR, and my 44. Every thing after I had to justify. Probably justified about 300 times. So it's all good.

I've had a Win 94 in .38-55 for about 25yrs or longer. It shoots like house afire with the Lyman #375449GC. But I have to crimp over the top of the front driving band, short throat. And it only likes IMR3031, 28.0grs. Drop it down 1-2grs, accuracy goes out the window. Same raising it a grain or two. It has it's "sweet spot" and that's it, no deviation. Bought the "new" #380681, it's great for a light load as cast, lubed with 45/45/10 from WLL. I use Trailboss, good plinking load.

I just don't see the need for 35/30, I've got the .38-55 and a Marlin in .35Rem.

But if ya got the $$$$, why not spend it on toys.

Cause ya can't take it with you. 100yrds

The 375449gc was the bullet for my old 375 Big Bore. Great bullet.
I was getting all hyped about the 35/30-30, read every I could find. Then I came to my senses, getting one more non standard cartridge, made me think twice.

Heck, if I could take it with me ? I'd need a couple of PeterBilts and a pair of 50ft boxes. And a Flatbed for My vehicles.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
John, don't worry, no one is laughing at you. I' sure we all understand having to make choices regarding money. I know I sure do. It's just that if we really had to justify things, we'd probably all be shooting Walmart ammo in a ratty old Stevens or JC Higgins found in the back corner at a garage sale.

And FWIW- I still have a set of 32 Rem dies I hunted Ebay for over 3 years about 15 years ago. They are for a rifle that I put a down payment on and it the got sold out from under me. IIRC I paid $85 for those dies! I get it.

Now your making fun of me. That ratty old Stevens was the pride of my fleet!!! LOL. Truth, unless your talking about my dog or my wife, I'm about as sensitive as an old boot.
One more truth. If I ran across two Winchester pre 64, 94's (shooters) the first would become a 38-55 and the second a 35/30-30. I really like the idea of a 35 caliber Winchester 94. I have about 8 to 10 - 35 caliber molds from 105 grain to 310 grain. Lot of potential fun there.
Bret the sunrises here at 10:36 and sets at 2:49 this afternoon. It's dark, so I have to try and get a rise out of somebody. 4:14 of daylight and 19:46 of dark winter, and its not December 20th yet. At least it's warming up to 5 above today. On December 20th its down to 3 hours and 41 minutes of sunlight. If your out in the flat lands your shadow at noon is about 200 feet long. The saving grace is we have a long twilight of about 1 1/2 before sunrise and after sunset, shooting light. On moon up nights, with the reflective snow, you don't need any other light.
About 35 or 40 years ago I bought a set each of 405 and 35 win RCBS dies and at that time they cost about $80 bucks each. Never did get a good 95 Winchester in 35 win.
I'm on a fixed income now and make a few bucks on the side now and then, but the truth is if I would thin the herd a little I could fund new projects. But that though kinda gives me the shakes.
