35/30 win

Paul brings up a good point. The 38/55 option for me was the most cost-effective, either 32/40 or 35/30 would have been appreciably more money to get launched. 38/55 is a "non-exotic", non-wildcat number still made and used in some numbers. It has its own quirks that you need to be aware of, but I'll resist the temptation to go totally off-topic here. The 35/30 is viable, practical wildcat that has a lot to offer. Next time I see a ratty Marlin 336 walking around in need of a keeper, it might get re-homed inside my safe after a visit to JES for 35/30 reboring. The days of "ratty $150 336s and 94s" have come to an end, I believe. Those were the days, my friends.

And I am bound to say--the 38/55 is a more useful caliber by accident than the 25/35 ever was on purpose. From what I have read, the 35/30 would have very similar attributes.

the 25/35 held the state mule deer record for Utah for quite a number of years, bet that deer is still in the top 3-4 it was a big buck from northern Utah.

Winchester still makes the model 94 in 38-55, it was in the 18-19 catalogue anyway.

many of the 100-150$ 94's were the later models or the angle eject ones.
I bought an angle eject carbine for $100 and sold it later that day for 125$, it was in near mint condition.
fast forward to ten years back and a fairly rough condition pre-64 carbine with a rubber recoil pad poorly added on was in the 400$ range.
but like y'all say they were everywhere, and one could always go find a marlin 336 in a pawn shop for the same price with no haggling in one day.

i believe it was in 1983? that the AE came out. the post-64's(top eject) was discontinued about the same year. personally, i don't like the AE. lever actions should stay open/peep sights, not scoped. the 1964 - 83? are the ones to give to JES. pre 64's needs to be cherished. the only was to send it to JES, is a shot out barrel. which to this day, i haven't seen one. tho i won't buy one, the 83's? and up have JES's name on them.

i just looked on GB and they want $400 and up for a m94 in 30-30. that is $200 more than i will pay. i must be old..........

Bill, the Lee 358-200RF is really, really tough to beat in the Marlin .35 Rem.
I have one of those molds and it makes me Mad! I have 2 MP molds and a NOE in 35 caliber too and Lee outshoots them all, not by much but it does. I so wanted the others that cost more to shoot better. My Tikka 358Win and the Lee mold can put them on the target in one ragged hole if I do my part.

I have the Lee 35-200 and the RCBS 35-200. Both cast nice bullets, the Lee bullet has a slightly wider meplat and is 5gr lighter. My Lee casts beautiful bullets quickly and is light.

left to right
35/30-30 starline brass casing
200gr rcbs fn gc
35/30-30 win with 200gr fn gc
30-30 with 165gr ranch dog
165gr ranch dog

CH4D makes them. its $116 s/h included.

i chose the 35/30 for the long neck. i can use 200-280gr boolits, while the 35 rem tops out at 220+gr boolits because of its short neck.

Good to know, Ian.

But Lee molds are so EXPENSIVE......

Easy to pick up a 2 cav to try a new design. Heck, Midsouth has 6 cav in this design for $40.
I really won't ever need that quantity, though, of this design.

yesterday i fired the 200gr fn gc and 16.0 - 20.0gr of 2400/dacron in my 35/30. it werked fine but i forgot the chrony!!!!! i should've put up a target(i fired at a 3"x3"x1" piece of steel painted fluorescent orange ) but i was more interested in the loads and my face
(rofl)
!!! the 16.0, 16.5, and the 17.0 of 2400 had soot on their cases, while the 17.5 thru 20.0gr did not. (the cases are 30-30 starline necked up to 35/30.) i also think that i can go up 2 - 3gr of 2400, but stupid
:P
"forgot" his chrony and now i don't know if the loads achieves 1700-1800fps. dang stupid, i should fire him.
(rofl)

shooting wise, i have a hard time on open sights, esp at 100 yards. a williams peep sight is my next move. but anyway i'll say that i did 50-60% on the orange painted steel. the rifle wasn't on a rest, it was on a tripod. and i was using my ol' kentucky windage!!! i had to raise the rifle up to put her on the target, she was 5 or 6" low and she was on the left/right. i was shooting her in a sleeveless t shirt and i could feel no recoil, or at least just a little itty bit of recoil. i shoot 5 shot strings and i couldn't feel the barrel heating up. 5 minutes after the string, i would shoot again. i should have stupid
(rofl)
check for powder residue in the barrel after each string, but i checked it afterwards, she was clean.

i should've rebored her years ago, i've forgotten how much fun the m94 is.

I have read that "Old Ephraim", the largest black bear ever taken in North America, also fell to the 25/35 WCF. While I am glad for both hunters' successes, some elements of light-tackle angling don't translate well to the game fields. Very sporting and intrepid, but my tastes don't run to such entertainments.

that's my area... LOL
that canyon where Ephraim was shot is probably the same one [or super dang close] to the one Dawn got her first deer in.
we were about a mile from the Utah border but on the downhill to Logan side of the Mtn.

the bear lake monster has been speculated as the loch ness monster or a cousin ever since I can remember.
Bear Lake is a natural lake, very deep and crystal clear. [it appears a deep blue anywhere above it]
I have been out on boats on it and could see the bottom clearly in 30-35' of water.

this afternoon i fire formed the 35/30 and the williams fp sight in. . i was using a 200gr fn gc and 20.0gr of 2400/tuft of dacron that goes 1726fps avg. my groups ranged from 1 3/4 - 2 1/2" groups at 100 yards(5 shoots/benched). i would run 3 shots at 3/4 - 1 1/4" at 100 yards. JES Reboring has another life long customer!!!!

i guessed that 20gr of 2400 was around 1700fps and danged if i'm right. that will be enuff for deer. i'm going to go 21 - 22gr of 2400, just to see if it goes up to 1800fps. but i think that 1726fps and an average 2 - 2 1/4" at 100 yards will be hard to beat. my average shot will be 50+/- yards at the deer/black bear.
