I always wanted a bolt action 35 Remington but have never seen one or heard of making one from another action. Is it feasible ?.Today I found a Savage Model 11,non accu-trigger rebored to .358 Win by JES,for 550.00.Whats the better option,or should I buy another donor bolt action and have it rebored or rebarreled.I know little about this stuff so any input is appreciated,Thanks.

Not sure the condition of that rifle, but I know JES does superior work. He is about 40 min. down the road from me.

re-barrel for a 358 win.
JES was having some issues with his 358 win re-boring not too long ago, and you might be getting one of the few problem barrels he had.

the 35 rem is a pretty easy conversion for a short action rifle, the rim isn't all that different, the body diameter is close to the 308 family, and the case length is long enough to feed without any difficulty.

another option is to look for a 358 win chambered Ruger Hawkeye, your not gonna go wrong with one of them and I bet you can get one for 500$ or less right now.
in about 20 years they will be pricey little rifles.

Quick and dirty ? You need a 1.128 OD blank and a Carcano action for the 35 Remington . Carcano clips are expensive for what they are .

A little more DIY . Start with a Savage 10/110 short action . Get a barrel turned . Pacific Tool and Gauge (PTG) makes severl Savage bolt heads . The 7.62×39 compatible piece is the one you want . They can of course be turned at home from a 223 bolt head and I don't have the Axis in hand but I think it has full bolt travel so you'd just change get a 308 mag for it .

A rebarrel of about any 98 pattern action or Savage 10/110 or any other Short action compatible with the Savage , 308 or x57 families for the 358 in a 14" twist is the easiest . There's lots of 308 brass around . It's basically a straight neck up , I did go 32/8mm , 358 FL for mine . If you use a 98 or a long action and the 358 isn't enough you can always move it up to 9×57 or 35 Whelen . There are probably contured short chambered barrels available for 358 and of course finished barrels for the Savage base .

The 358 will burn a little more powder than the 35 Remington but it will also be a 250 yd elk rifle if pressed (I'd rather have a 180gr 06' but I wouldn't hesitate to use the 358 for even moose) . You can always turn the 358 down to 35 Rem but it's out of the question to turn up the 35 Remington .

Don't use an inside the bow floor plate release in a 98 if you're interested in going full bore ...... It's a hassle to keep closing it and picking up your ammo .
I got 2150 fps with a 35-250 FP RCBS . The 35 XCB is a breeze in mine but I have more work to do to get the load and before I do that I have to get some lube that is up to the task with so little groove available , some 2500 white lable maybe , of course my chamber was cut with the XCB reamer also ........

In a bolt gun given the choice of the 2 , I would go to the 358 again .

the 358 with a 12 twist willl churn out a 250gr cast bullet to over 2300 fps without even trying.
I use a saeco 250gr bullet sized to 358 and just used jacketed loads to start with.
50grs of rl-19 will get you just over 2400 and it will get your attention at the bench too, I backed off to 48.5grs for best results and around 2350.
it will pancake a deer just fine if you put a quarter to 50 cent piece sized hole in the off shoulder of a 200 lb deer no problem.
you do not want to use a big flat meplat at those type of speeds it will make a mess.

I’ve got a 358 Win made up on an FN military action and have really enjoyed it. My son took a liking to it about 20 years ago and I reckon it’s his now! I came across a 35 Rem Barrel on another site and am having a SR Mauser made up with it.

I do think you will have greater flexibility with the 358 and will find it easier to come across or made up if you so desire. Good luck in your quest.

Fiver,

wait... 1200?
they were 600$ brand new.

he was having an issue somewhere in the throat area.
I'm not exactly sure, but the ball seat/end of the chamber area was causing some higher pressures for some guy's for a period of time.
we had a pretty long discussion about it on another site.
the problem finally got resolved for the most part, but I think Jess's finish reamer had finally worn down.

This is an " older " JES rebore.

Here is a 3 shot group at 50 yards.
Ruger # 1
35 Whelen Ack Imp. , 17.5 grs. 2400
NOE 360318, 250 gr. RN , G/C, sized .3595"
6 power Redfield Scope.
This has " DEAD DEER " written all over it.

Nice group Ben. I messaged the guy selling the Savage .358 to see if he knows when it was done, most of his rifles that he sells look like re-bores.

JES did my Tikka about 6 months ago. It shoots great and my only complaint is the short throat that I am to fix.
