should I try too lap it out or I guess first try it?

Does a small front band matter?

Base and middle are 358-359 front band is 356-3565 want to size to 357

Elmer Keith will be spinning in his grave, but most versions of Lyman #358477 are dimensioned in this manner--and those castings have shot LIGHTS OUT for me for almost 40 years. It is by some distance my favorite 38 Special and 38 S&W bullet EVER.

Whats your alloy/composition? Diff alloys can give slight differences in diameter from same mold.
Also Powder coating can up diameters nicely.

CZ93X62 has it right. Elmer designed it with a full caliber front band, but Lyman or it's predecessor reduced it in diameter. When MP Molds offered this mold on a group buy, they did the same darn thing. So, I ordered the mold in .360 diameter, which after I sized it down to .358 brought all the bands to .358 diameter.

Yes, different alloys will give different diameters, but the difference in diameter is across all the bands, so that front band will always be smaller than the other bands.

Then I agree and its how it was designed.... But also mentioned Powder Coat will make all the same if thats what you desire.

The problem with the true Elmer Keith SWC doesn't lie within the design of the bullet, but rather with the revolvers. Small cylinder throats and abrupt chamber/throat transitions preclude a universal fit. Being a production company, Lyman/Ideal kept reducing the front band diameter and width to accommodate the smallest cylinders expected to be seen from production revolvers (much to Keith's dismay).

Accurate Molds has a very good, illustrated description of revolver throat fit on the bullet design page. You pretty much either fit the bullet to the revolver, or ream the cylinder to fit your whimsy.

I have read that Keith had some nasty things to say about Lyman taking it upon themselves to change his design.

If that bullet does not shoot to your liking, you might try seating the bullet out a little further so that the first band is beginning to engage the taper in the cylinder to center it in the cylinder throat.

I have had great success using Keith's principles of close-fit front drive band, and with the #358477's less exacting and shorter front drive band. I'm not sure that it makes much difference, but I do know that my revolver mould collection is thoroughly dominated by SWC bullet designs.

Alloy is about 1-2% Sn and 1% Sb what worries me is the 357446 I have is like this one with a small front band and it shoots patterns NOT groups I hope this one would be better but maybe it will be its longer.

Maybe the 357446 is just a crappy mold.

yeah,,,, I don't think your gonna get many takers... LOL.

I'm Like Allen and a fan of the 477.
it doesn't seem like it'd do as well as it does.
even further you'd think some of the 43 different nose designs would shoot better than some of the others but [shrug] all of the ones I've seen and shot have pretty much overlapped each other in all aspects.

There are different 357446s, like most Lyman designs. Everytime I think I have them all represented, I find a different one. My favorite one so far is a late Lyman version with a full diameter, heavy driving band like the original Keith design. Some of the FTDBs are really puny, and I don't even cast with those designs.
