44 Special revolver

just to throw some more info into the pile.
some of my reading from the old days shows the smiffs and the colts had some different ideas about cylinder and barrel diameter.
they kind of ranged from 427 [or smaller on some barrels] to 430.
so sizing for many of them would be 428 or 9 instead of the larger 430 we all subscribe to [unless you own a marlin lever rifle] now.
they also used a couple of different twist rates back in the first half of the 20th century.

now this isn't a diss on their process, because they also done the same thing to the 38 and 357 revolvers back then.
some of those barrels measured down to 354 [and not under the frame]

anyway if you got a 44 special it is well worth your time to go ahead and measure stuff and play with the BHN some afterward for the best results.

I ran across another classic mold for the 44 Special. Its a 429383. Its a 246 RN

I had cast a batch of SAECO 441's SWC's sized.431 with 6grs. of 231. This load is listed less than 15500 psi. That mold is an antique from an estate sale. These loads were used in our local informal match. The accuracy at 25yards off-hand was excellent. I have used mainly 420241and long ago 429383. I prefer Unique and Accurate #5. In this faux famine 231 would have to do. The handgun is a 624 no dash. My 60's vintage Model 29 shoots extremely well as a 44 Special. I have a 7.5" Vaquero 44 Magnum that will be a committed 44 Special. It's an older gun but shows great promise. I don't worry about crud rings.

that was the 'only' mold for the special and the russian till the 429241 come along.
What about the #429251 ?
I've used it a lot, it's the original bullet for Russian & Special. Like most 19th Century bullets, it's crimp on the ogive.
Got an OLD Lee 2cav, it's easy to see where Lee got the idea for it.

Don’t ask fiver questions.

It leads to thread rift and suddenly you get to hear about his dogs brother in law planting a garden. The dogs daughter and husband are nothing but trouble as well.

well my brother in laws dog isn't into gardening quite as much as the sister in law, which means the BIL is now into it too.
his dog is one of my dogs sisters, only she does dog stuff and mine don't do nuthin dog except eat and dig holes.
she excels at both of those like a boss though.

yeah the 251,,, straight up black powder straight wall case bullet.
the weight for both the russian and special was a RN at 246grs., the 251 is pretty close, but it would be some closer to 260grs. in the original 40-1 alloy.
