Not Ian but my Marlin loves a 420 gr cast with 24 gr of 2400. Off a bench at 100 with a scope it does 2” for 5 shots all day long. Runs in the 1350 fps range and I would easily shoot deer with that load.

I used to load for trapdoors, with 405 (about 415, actually) hollow base Lee bullets. Loads were variable, depending on the rifle. Anything faster than 2400 would lose the obturation before the muzzle and lead (some of those rifles have reverse tapers). 16 grains and fill her up with yellow cornmeal worked if nothing else would.

Thanks guys. I don't have hollow base bullets. Presently have 300gr, 345gr and 405gr flat base bullets. I have loaded some of the 345gr bullets with 24.0gr of 2400 and some with 25.0gr of 4227, but have yet to shoot them. Wondering how these 2 powders would work with the 300gr bullet? They are presently loaded with 11.0 - 13.0gr of Red Dot, Green Dot, 700-X, Solo 1000 and Unique. Looking for something that resembles a .45 Colt load.

10-16 gr of Unique pretty much fills the gap between Colts and 45-70 with 350-405ish . It's a little sloppy even lifted to load and lowered to shoot .

I would appreciate anyone's thoughts on 45 70 with cast 350 grain bullet. Also I have 2 lbs of 2400 alliant powder I would like to use up in the loading. I have a Henry steel framed rifle.
Just purchased Hornady ftx 325 grain bullets. How hot can I go with 2400.alliant.powder in my 45 70 HENRY?

28.0 grains of IMR-4198 duplicates the black powder-level ballistics in my rifles (1250-1300 FPS) with 405 grain cast bullets. 2 more grains (30.0) pushes it about 75 FPS faster, and gives smaller ES and SD. 28.0 is as far as I would go in a Trapdoor, but in a Marlin/Henry/Ruger you have a bit more strength to exploit.

Both reloader 7 and IMR 4198 have been so accurate in my 45-70 with 405gr bullets. I only load to trapdoor levels. And with the accuracy of these powders I have never tried any others.
