6-6-6-1 lube

Made some 6-6-6-1 lube last night. The batch I made three years ago finally ran out.

Some aren’t crazy about this lube but it’s done all I’ve asked from it including keeping the first cold bore shot within the group.

Here’s the recipe for those of you who aren’t familiar with it

6 oz gulf paraffin wax
6 oz beeswax
6 oz Vaseline
1 oz ivory soap

I’ll include pics from along the way. I start by melting my paraffin wax, Vaseline, and ivory soap. It will foam up pretty good but I just do a lot of stirring until it settles down.

Then I crank up the heat more and wait for the soap to fully dissolve. You should have a clear liquid with no chunks.

I premelt my beeswax and add it to the the rest of the ingredients after allowing them to cool down for a minute or so. Then wisk the mix together and pour into the mold of your choice.

I didn’t get a pic of the later process due to it getting pretty smokey. That was after I told my wife I was going to make a batch of bullet lube and it wouldn’t stink up the house or anything.

Cool, thanks for sharing your process.

Here's a picture of smokey.... 31% soap recipe @ about 470°F, or about ten degrees before the "poof point"!

It says in the constitution to "ensure domestic tranquility", so you ought to take note and NEVER do any of this stuff in the house. Seriously, don't breath the smoke even a little bit, it's quite bad for you.

I didn’t remember it being that Smokey when I did it on the grill burner outside the last time.

It mainly just filled the house with the baby powder smell in the Vaseline so she didn’t complain too bad.

May be........ But it's one of the FEW lubes that can handle double digits below zero! And quite well too!

okay I have gave out this secret before.
if you make lube in the kitchen it smells like something, maybe not to us but to them it does.
how you get around this is to put a bag of popcorn in the wave and cook it for about 30 seconds too long.
you want to burn it without making a mess in the microwave, and you don't want it to start on fire but you got to get some black ones in there.

Fiver, my wife is NOT impressed. She just said "nice" and it wasn't in a Tone that made me feel it was a sincere nice. You know the tone.

Thanks for the tip. Might eight save me or give me a salt bath after being skinned either way it will be worth it. Last time i had to make her scented Lube to save my skin and now Her Majesty is complaining because i have loaded her any rounds with scented lube yet.

I'm due to make a batch of lube, thinking of trying this one. Hopefully not only a cold weather lube but hot weather as well?

I'm guessing the paraffin would stiffen more then beeswax? Or a combo?

My experience in SW Louisiana with 666+1 was it didn’t like the heat. It just doesn’t get cold enough for long periods of time here. Your temperature and humidity levels may be way different from ours. Just FYI.

I'd say we have more cold than SW La but probably have similar heat and humidity. Worst of both worlds.

It does get a little runny during hot weather. I just keep my ammo out of the sunlight until I’m ready to shoot.

I use this lube because of it’s ability to put the first cold bore shot in the group. So far I’ve only tested at 60 degrees down to about 30. That’s good enough for me considering that about the average temps around hunting seasons.

A bunch of us worked on lubes to deal with just exactly the problem you're having, SMac. I can't say we came up with the perfect solution, but came very close. It's called SL-71B, final iteration developed by Barn right here on this forum.

Basically it's three parts with one being a blend of beeswax, high-temp microcrystalline waxes (+160F), and small portion of high-temp paraffin (140F), another part being petroleum jelly, and another part fresh, damp Ivory soap, about equal by weight. Add 2% by total volume of the other ingredients castor bean oil, and cook according to the SL-68B recipe JonB has posted, or like Will posted regarding 6-6-6-1.

I have found that the SL-71B is a much better lube than the 6-6-6-1 lube. The first shot is always in the group.

I have used the 6 6 6 +1 and it worked very respectable for me!

I have not gone crazy with testing not enough time in the day but so far it has done well.
