I second the garbage sale 4831 load with 170-ish grain cast bullets in .30-30. If there's any sensitivity to variances it's more an internal volume thing than an exact weight thing.

I have some IMR 4831 I prob won't use for anything else, and would have NEVER looked at it for 30-30 170 cast!

You can see the nose on one of Ranch Dog's
earlier T/L 165 gr. .30 cal. moulds.

Quite different than the version I'm holding.

The exact shape of the nose right where I drew the red line makes that an extraordinary bullet for the Marlins that will chamber them.

And the meplat is larger on the newer mold. The overall length of the bullet is also shorter for the newer version.

If mine shoots, that will be just fine !
By the way, I don't own a Marlin.
Sounds like the odds may not be in my favor.
If mine doesn't shoot well in any of the
MANY .30 cal. rifles that I own , it goes on the trading block.

I have way too many .30 cal designs that do
shoot well in my rifles to get all tangled up in a design
that may never work well in any of them.

I’ve got a 6 cavity plain based “Lee 311-165-rf” coming my way. It was a good price and comes with handles.

I just can’t seem to stop buying 30 cal molds!

And, no I don’t own a 30-30!

Will post a few pics when I get my hands on it.

Josh

P.s. A 30-30 is on my wish list.

The 30-30 is running neck in neck with, 35 Whelen, and 300 BO. It’s most likely gonna be the one that I find by accident, that wins. Many things in my life seem to happen like that, opportunistically!

My old man left me a Sear’s Win 94 30-30 which is fun. And I stumbled across a Savage 340 30-30 bolt gun with peep sights for $159.
Fun plinking all day long with both.

I’d love either one of those. Especially if it was named after a famous baseball player;).

Sears marketed a bunch a stuff under the Ted Williams name. They rebranded the Winchester Model 94 as the “Ted Williams Model 100”. They often sell for much less than a true Winchester, even less if the gun was drilled and tapped for a scope. I’d be looking for a shooter anyways.

Western Washington and I are hard on blued steel. I honestly prefer inexpensive 90%-80% finish low round count guns. That way I’m not to worried when I get the first stock ding or the dreaded rusty fingerprint.

I’m 46 and teach with a bunch of a 60 year old Boomers. When they retire I won’t be the “kid” anymore.
