A Christmas Present

Hi Folks,
In a thread earlier you guys were asking about what you got good for Christmas:
Well I sort of got this as a High Bidder on GB
It is a really nice Savage 340 ( Circa 1953 ...year of my birth) 30-30 I bided my time and researched the Seller so I knew this was the one I wanted & True to his ratings it was far better then advertised!

I ordered a Williams FP- 340 receiver sight just to try it out ( It was only drilled for receiver sights)
This is a pic below first time on the range

Here is some of the targets shot first time out as is out of the box! Top is the first group and bottom the 2nd group

Then I went out the next day with a different bullet !

Today I added a new front sight a Lyman 17A along with a new front ramp which allowed for more movement of the Williams Receiver sight!

So now I have a new goal of shooting the 30 WCF as accurately as I can with cast bullets with receiver sights!

That is a very good looking rifle. Probably the best condition I have seen one in. Very good looking wood too.

There is a Bunch on Gun Broker: Just got to know how to read the "seller" not necessarily the posted photos!
That is the key to bidding on Gun Broker

Jim...just took the time to enlarge some of those pictures and can't believe how good the condition is....

You did a great job getting it set up too..

I can see a lee 30-30 neck sizing die in your future...if you don't have one...

Born in 53 huh? That puts us born in the same year. That's a good looking rifle and looks like it's going to be a good shooter for you.

Awesome rifle and shooting Jim! Yours is in WAY better shape than mine. But I won't complain for $159
Mine shoots the 165gr RD very well too. Love the peep sights. Mine even came with some Lyman receiver sights.
I love the stock on your rifle...very nice.

JW, those are interesting targets. Where did you find those at? They look like they might be the ticket for Irons and older eyes.

Uhh,no comment on the '53,JW..haha.

But DANG,that is a very clean rig you got.Next thought was....that thing is gonna be dangerous (to whatever is on the receiving end, coke cans, game, etc)!

Thanks Guys!
Stonecrusher I made up that target a few years ago for shooting peep sights with a front post sight on my Marlin 336.
I was looking for ideas on what folks were using and started developing my own ideas and came up with the inverted triangle inside a 2/3 circle
which was easier for me to see.
I will post a link to download a PDF that can be printed at 100% for you or anyone else that is interested once I get home this evening and upload the file.

Promptly downloaded and printed to try out, THANK YOU JIM and STONECRUSHER, that's exactly what I was looking for to use with my new Skinner peep!

Guys.... just so you know I have many types of targets archived on my system. In my profession ( Commercial Photographer) it is easy for me to whip up all kinds of targets in Photoshop....
of course most are to serve my needs: I shoot a lot of receiver and aperture front sights so I have black bulls from 3" on up to 12 inch: & for my scope guns I have many Bench rest style targets....All I'm willing to share since the have helped me!
Just let me know

Jim, I'm working with a Marlin 1894, peeps and post front sight that subtends 7" at 50 yards. I really like the black square with the white V and truncated triangle bottom. Any chance that 50 yd. post target can be blown up a bit to accomodate aging eyes and a coarse front sight?

Might be useful for revolver guys too?

Jim, let me sketch it out best I can, I'll scan it if I can get my gizmo to work. I'll PM it to you.

Appreciate it, I think there is a need for better open sight targets.
