Plain, flat base bullets do better for me if they are baked base-up.

Yes Yes I have found this out to! Actually I have found if I bake all my bullets nose down (I have a few size screens ) accuracy is better regardless of Gas Check or Plain base. I shoot slow so Nose defects do not matter to me.

A good 30-30 bolt action is a joyful thing. I converted a 93 Spanish Mauser a couple of years back and it's one of my favorites for sure. JW, your groups are inspiring.

You Betcha! It is one of my favorite cast bullet target rifles!
The 30 WFC in A bolt gun is a dream! First off the caliber is an excellent Cast Bullet cartridge : secondly I can fire just about any size 30 caliber bullet through it!
It Has been sidelined since the summer because I broke the mainspring! The original from 1953...(pretty sure)
Finally got a replacement from Numrich...to awhile to get because of slow shipping ...then also dragged my feet to replace it!
But it is ready to go to the range I just have to start loading Casts for rifle again since I went on my quest for trying to shoot my pistols again! Put them away in 2012! Then went full time cast bullets in rifles!
I'm sure it will be tuning in some good groups again so I will be posting about her soon!

As you probably can see I can not leave well enough alone! I customized it and shoot Peep and Globe in the bright light of summer then change over to target scope and custom mount in winter when the days are dark!
So Summer targets are "skill" .....winter targets are all the accuracy of the 340!

Actually I'm working with Savage's custom shop right now on a long heavy barrel Single shot bolt action 30-30 bench type rifle for cast bullets!
If it happens it will be the last gun I buy! Last gun I need!

OK she Is back at the Range...after a broken trigger main spring! Had to take the barreled action out of the stock and the scope off ( I was shooting with scope sights when it broke!) Bad news is the trigger pull has increased by near 1 lb since the new spring vs. the old and very worn spring!
Thought for sure that was going to cause me problems!

First 3 shots on the range today were only about 2" low in a tight group ( shooting Low Node at 50 yards as usual)....Dialed it in and she was back to normal and I'm thinking the extra trigger pull may be good...... since all of the starting targets were good!
Posting the last 2 -10 shot groups below. Pretty happy with the reconditioned old Girl!

their model 12 [single shot] was available in 220 swift and really shouldn't be all that hard to make in 30-30.
a barrel and bolt face change would probably turn the trick with minimal effort.
