A Little 458 Socom Fodder

I forgot to add; these cast @ .460~ and I sized them with a .458 Lee sizer (~.4575) and with the second additional dunk into the PC and cook, they now size at ~.460. Should be perfect. Probably going to go with some IMR4227 for starters.

don't under estimate 10grs. of unique and a 300 or 350gr bullet in the 45-70.
your running 454 casull speeds and weights, only without the drama and fire, it's a pretty popular lever gun silhouette combination around here.

You lost me on that one fiver. I assume you're saying to use Unique with the 350'ish grain bullet IN MY 458 Socom, right? Will a 10 gr charge be enough to cycle the action on the AR?

I don't disagree, however, no got me some 2400. I will stay within the bounds of my means.

Actually I haven't yet. This Tromix barrel/upper is VERY tight in the chamber and I always make up a dummy round to check first. Thanks for the heads up; and good read on the link you provided.

I started loading these coated with HiTek and found I could load them slightly longer than at the crimp groove like others were doing. When I switched to PC I found it was hit and miss at that length. I am shooting them out of a RRA upper so I seated them deeper and found loaded to the crimp groove was perfect and I don't have any issues anymore.

In the pic below you can see how far out I used to seat the HiTek coated NOE bullet.

Gary, have you verified that your rounds fit the chamber? I am using an Accurate 46-305S mold cut to drop at .457” and after coating sized to .4585”, any larger and failure to chamber fully occurs. See the thread I did about this here: https://www.artfulbullet.com/index.php?threads/accurate-46-305s-for-458-socom-msr.6991/

Since that time I have also done some load work up with Shooters World Heavy Pistol that shows promise.

+1. .4585" bullets in Starline brass is absolutely the largest that will chamber in my Tromix chamber. .458" bullets get washed out from gas leakage and tumble.

Hodgdon Longshot is most successful for me with pistol gas and 500-grain subsonics. HOWEVER........those of you using Quickload for this beware that Longshot is highly under-predicted, so reduce by 30% for starters if using this powder in the Socom. HS6, Power Pistol, and 2400 were right on predictions as I recall.
