A little long range shooting

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg My brother and I took his newish Savage 12 LRP in .260 out to central Oregon over the weekend for a little testing. He is running Berger 140gr. Match Hybrid Target bullets with a BC of .618
We loaded them with H4350 in Nosler brass and sparked by CCI 200 primer. We got on the 10 1/2" steel plate at 1000 yards after only 3 shots to adjust the scope that was zeroed at 100 yards. He then got a three shot group at 1000 that was right around 7". I had to pat myself on the back just a little being that I loaded the ammo :)
I was very proud of him. We are both very new to long range shooting and it is proving to be very challenging yet extremely fun! We had bigger targets out at 1500 and 1760 yards. One mile. He got one hit at 1500. He got very close lots of times at both the 1500 and one mile. Our spotting scope is not up to the task of seeing trace and impact at those distances. It was a fun weekend.
We also did some 1911 and revolver work at soda cans full of water at 100 yards.
To say I like my new Refhawk 44 is an understatement. He still out shot me with his RIA .45ACP though. Once again, my reloads and cast bullets. :)

Well done. Cans at 100 with handguns are a hoot.

You need to see what cast will do at 1000! A nice long 30 cal bullet in the 22-2400 fps range would do well. Just need some elevation in the scope.

Looks like an extremely fun day. I'm absolutely green with envy.

Used to love chasing a soda can up the road with the 1911.

Well, i was all excited about my 100 yd. groups today untill i read this lol.
A 7" group at a 1000 yds. is darn good shooting with "any" bullet...WOW!!!
Sounds like lots of fun with the handguns too and more good shooting!

Heck yeah, it's been years since I got to shoot at 1000 yards and it IS a challenge. I might add that one of the most pleasant-shooting .1911s I ever shot was a friend's RIA. Sloppy loose, smooth as silk, crisp trigger, and scary accurate.

Ian. His RIA shoots every bit as good as my Kimber.
We will be back out there over the Labor Day weekend for more long range shooting. I'll have the .308 this time. Hoping I can put some rounds on target at 1000 and 1250
Time to get reloading....

Got a report from a friend of hits at 1000 meters on steel silhouettes with .338 Lap Savage.
Put a 6" shoot n see on the steel and hit the corner with 1st shot, second time out, with a
zero from previous visit.
Savage makes some really serious guns
