Tool time and waste are important but setup time is very expensive. Long time ago I watched 4 cinimatti machines hog out large blocks of metal (think 5" shipboard gun turrets), running 24hrs a day. Very NOT cost effective but hey, Mil Spec., no welding allowed and casting was way too expensive. Coulda afforded several Cadillacs from the chips.

Found out the hard way that shrink tooling isn't all the same. Had trouble with one brand slipping on 3/4" or larger high helix tooling. Changed brands and it worked well. Finally went to hydraulic chucks for the inserted high helix larger dia. tooling. Probably something else entirely these days. Been out 2 years now, the high end machining game changes rapidly.

And it is expensive to get into and stay in. We don’t really plan to go there, lots of stuff to do on the lower end.

Definately, several years ago when I was involved the Makinos were 750k each and the cell system was closer to 1 mil. Think there was 11 of the Makinos and 3 cells when I left. Glad I didn't have to sign for it.
