AA 2230 and the 30-30

I picked up a pound of AA 2330 a few weeks ago as an impulse purchase. There was powder on the shelf, so I bought it.

I’ve used 748 and H-414 to load “full steam” 30-30 loads. My stock of 748 is very low, and I expect that the H-414 in my 16” carbine barrel isn’t burning completely. So, I thought to myself why don’t you try a new powder. I seem to remember reading that Fiver had used 2230 in 30-30, and the Western Powders Manual lists data for it so I went ahead and bought a pound.

I’ve read that it can be “primer sensitive”. Not sure what that means exactly?

Is there anything else I should know about this powder?

It is a very good 223 powder. I tried it in one of the 3030 rifles I had. I don't remember anything that stands out so that means it should be fine. It is a bit faster than 748 so it should burn well in the 3030.

24.5 is enough [my favorite] 27.5 is the top.
it doesn't need nor want a magnum primer, and the top load definitely is not happy with one in the heat.
24.5 is perfect with a 150-180,,, plus it's my 223/AR 60gr Jacketed on down load,,, which makes things easy.

oh IIRC it's also sweet for speedy 150gr. 8 mauser J-word loads... speedy as in 2900+.

Interesting, I looked for jacketed 8 mm Mauser load data but couldn’t find any. I did find a guy who was running a reduced load of 29 grains in 8mm with cast that he liked very much.

But, there is data for 303 British, many times I’ve used 303 British data in my 7.7x58mm Japanese. So there is a new powder for that.

Sportsman’s has Xterminator for sale at $24.99. Which is the same powder. So I might pick up some more. That’s a great of price for rifle powder right now.

yeah it is.
and 2230 is a great one to have around.
i went kind of stupid playing with it 25-20, 357 max, 30-30, 223, 375 win.
not all were book loads or even close to what it's intended use is, but it worked without complaint.
