Accurate 46-305S for 458 SOCOM MSR

Ordered this mold some time ago for my 16" MSR in 458 SOCOM and will be trying some loads this weekend. Last tests seemed to indicate that a 300~320gn cast bullet could be a pleasant yet lethal close range hog hunting combination. We are having problems with feral hogs in our citrus groves as they root out irrigation lines and damage crops and trees.

The mold is a 4-cavity and Tom cut it to drop at 0.457" and after PC'ing they are sized to 0.4585". (I have tried fatter but the tight chamber won't allow for this.)

So far, powders that worked well are 2400, 4759 & RL7 in my rifle with cast. Fortunately I have a good supply of these powders!

Sounds like fun! My Tromix chamber absolutely maxes out on .4585" bullets as well. 4580" gas-cuts and leads, .4588" jams. It is a fine line.

Nice!
I have never owned a slick-sided mould myself. But I think I’ll have to try one, one day. Those bullets look like nice hog hammers! Good luck, and keep us posted!

I dont own a slick mold. I really should with all I cast and shoot being 98% powder coated. But I dont.

I dont have a socomb. I went Bushmaster. But my buddy has a Bear Creek upper in Socomb. He loves the RCBS 300 FP bullet. Powder coated.
Ill have a slick mold one day!!

Thats not a very friendly cast chamber... But it looks great!!

Actually it is quite cast-friendly and results in very fine accuracy due to the close tolerances. There is also a nice, straight-taper throat transition and the tight chamber neck acts like a long freebore to guide the bullet straight.

I have been shooting something slightly heavier in my .458 SOCOM. I was looking for a 300-350 gr. ish bullet for a general shooting load. I got the NOE HTC 459-354-FN which is a slick sided bullet with a GC that comes out to 360 gr. when coated and GC'd. It is funny that I got this bullet for my SOCOM but found it shoots really nice in my 45-70 also which was a bonus. I load it for the .458 SOCOM with AA 1680 and push them out at just under 1,400 fps. which makes for a good all around shooting load.

Here is the bullet coated in HiTek and GC'd

Here is the bullet PC'd & GC'd and loaded in 45-70 and the SOCOM

I always look at these slick sided bullets and wonder what some of the old timers would have to say if you walked up and handed them one.
I can imagine Elmer's first response [the bleep is this?]
