Advice for newbie

My advice would be to make yourself familiar with the alloy calculator on the Boolits site. There was a lot of work done to create that and it seems to be fairly accurate. You can put your formula into the program, then print out the results, then store the info with the ammo.
Second would be to read up on a good lube if your not going to powder coat. Finding Ben’s recipe was a game changer for me, I use it for everything, including slugs and buckshot.

Great advice Rally! Thanks.

I was trying to avoid that other site but I'll just stay off the forum part.

my experience on the other site hasn't been bad.... I'm not sure what the heartburn is about it, but I've had good discussions there.
There are some people on there with a LOT of good information, and most of them are willing to share/discuss without being snarky.

I have the Security Six as well. Def a Tank! I like it for 357 cause no worries about beating it up. I just got a Redhawk 45 Auto/45 Colt. Round butt. If the Six is a Tank, the RH is a BIG King Tiger Tank! It is a beast. But I actually like it so far. Shot some Colts in it yesterday. Yet to shoot 45 ACP - need the moonies to show up.

I really like the original standard Redhawk... had a few of them. I have wanted one of the 45/ACP round butts for a while, but cannot make myself pay that much for one... maybe someday. I have a couple of 45 Blackhawks, and they are keeping me occupied so far.

There are a bunch of us here that used to be there, put immense amounts of time and even $$ into it. There's a reason we're here now, we'll leave it at that.

Question about PC and no-gas checks. Wouldn't a cast bullet distort under high pressure and accuracy suffer as a result. And, in that case, you would need a gas check? Have you found this be false from experience?

I first found Powder Coating time consuming by having to stand or walk around my garage shaking the bullets in a Miracle Whip container. Then I tried my tumbler and use that now. It's much easier to PC now.

I can't speak to PCing at all, but you can use GC designs w/o the GC successfully. By successfully I mean you can get groups at 50 yards or further that are actual groups and not random patterns. BUT, it takes a lot of farting around and playing with stuff and it's exponentially easier with the check. ALL cast bullets distort to a greater or lesser degree under pressure, lower or higher. That's your dynamic fit. Accuracy can suffer or it can improve depending on how it all melds together. That's the "art" in the "art and science". And no, I'm no expert on it. The older I get, I think the less I know.

Try it and see.

I don't have much time to shoot. Also, I wish there was a tool that works like a pencil sharpener and can scrap a bevel into the base of cast bullets so I can press on gas checks.
Keith here on the forum, also makes one. Used you can find Egan's and Pacific's once in a while on eBay.

I use an RCBS combination chamfer/deburring tool that has the stud on the deburring end removed. Use it for the very, very occasional fat base. A twist or two is all it takes.

I use a RCBS chamfer tool with the pin removed as well. Need it for 45 & 50 cal
Also have the NOE tool which is not as aggressive but does the job

champher tool here too.
then i figured out how to pour rounded gas check bases.
it ain't easy keeping the weights within a good range, but once you figure it out you can make a good run of them.
