Advice wanted on the .35 Whelen

Bret4207

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Norwegian Elk Hounds were fairly popular when I was kid where I grew up. I think there were at least 4 or 5 in our area. I always thought they were an offshoot of a Husky/German Shepherd type cross. Every one of them had a reputation as a bad deer chaser, something severely frowned on here. Now I know why they were such chasers and how wrong I was. My apologies to those dogs!

My MP-moulds arrived this evening. Ordered them two days ago... man, that is fast. 20% discount was very tempting, I ordered three moulds :)
360-200 gc, four cav solid. 360-220gc fp/hp. And 358-165-rf (actual diameter .360). The last mould was bought a little on impulse, I admit. If it doesn’t work in the whelen, I can always sell it. If it does work, it can be a pleasant «lead saver» load, that might have some other, practical applications as well. We’ll see.

Glad you know how to practice self restraint

Those look amazing! Nothing wrong with having the light mould, in fact it is really nice to have a "target" bullet available for the heavy-hitting rifle cartridges because they let the rifle get enjoyed at the range a lot more than they typically do on account of recoil. You have plenty of good pistol powder and I'm sure will find a nice target loas in short order.

8 grains of sumthin works in bout everything....vectan AO would be one I'd go for with that plain base mold.

Hate to do this to you CW....but there is a very good solution to the old 3589 or 358009. NOE has a 360-280 in the RG series....these come in both gas checked and plain base...but with the RG series you will get a flat point pins measuring. .200 across the meplat, a cup point pins and a hollow point. You can end up with the famous 3589 with a .200 flat meplat. Click the link below.

THAT bullet Might work!!

its nose is .350

i have a NOE 360-280 closer the the Lyman 358009 and its nose is larger and engraves rifling.

Yes....I saw your post on the bullet noting you wanted a flat point. The RG series of the NOE bullet will give you just that.

Not so much that I want a FP altho I do prefer a large meplat on a hunting bullet.
This bullet shoots very well before powdercoat because of its extra diameter. I wish I could have both!

Still waiting for my local police department to process my application for the Whelen barrel... In the mean time, my «man cave» keeps filling up with moulds, and expectations.....

These came in the mail today, from CBE «down under». Nice brass moulds!
Their web page contains no technical drawings, just a photo of the bullet in question.

The 360-300-gc looks like a bore rider. So, not a warp speed bullet, probably. But hey, 300 grs and a decent meplat; warp speed is not what this bullet is about.

The 358-250-gc has a different nose, with a conical transition. This looks seriously good, in my opinion. Right now, Ikm taking them through a few heat cycles in my toaster oven. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to cast with them soon.

Really nice looking mould blocks, especially the vent lines. I bet your shoulder won't like warp speed with 300 grains, either. With that meplat and caliber, 1800 fps ought to be plenty.

cast bullet engineering used to have a presence here in the states too.
haven't heard too much about them for a while, but they make some outstanding molds.
When Jim (Allison?) retired and sold the company, the new owners are more involved with making moulds for early British and European rifles.

Got the opportunity to cast some bullets the other day. I have found it difficult to cast good bullets when temp is below freezing, or just above- with wind. The 360-300 weighs 310grs with GC. The nose is a bit undersize at 347- but with a layer of PC, it is right at .350. Think I’ll get a couple of nose bushings from NOE, to ensure the long bore-riders will chamber- these are meant for serious work :)
The 358-250 weighs in at 260grs with GC. I think that bullet would make a fine big game bullet as well. I’ll see how they shoot. The whelen barrel is ready next week

The .35s are on the right

@S Mac ; that’s the NOE311-166, a bullet I mainly use for my brothers Marlin 30/30
@Bret4207 : if two moose line up properly, I might be able to get both with one bullet :)

The big slug is meant for moose and wild boar, if I get it to shoot. And if I survive the recoil...
