Amazing gift from a friend

On Friday nights I meet some friends at the local gun shop/range to look for bargains, chat a bit and then when
it closes, go to dinner at a local restaurant, and just have a nice time with old (mostly) shooting buddies, although
one of the group is about 32, half the age of most of us.

In any case, one friend last night asked me if I had a 'depth mike'. I said yes, and he seemed a bit disappointed,
and told me he had "wound up with one" and thought I might be able to use it. He got it and here is what I
found when I opened the box.

He wouldn't let me give him anything for it. I have done some trigger jobs on 1911s and work on his Garand and
some revolver work over the years, and we share a love of aircraft in addition to guns, have been to Oshkosh many
times together, so I guess it works out.

I sure was surprised. And tickled. I only had snap gauges for inside measurements until now. Of course these are limited to
about 2" and up, but I am sure I will be able to use some of it at some point.

Amazed me. And all the protective goop still on everything, and the plastic on the spanners and
the mic body all unopened. :) AND Mitutoyo, a really quality brand IME.

He's got plenty more gun wrenching in the bank....although it was already there, really.

And Brad, he is a pharmacist, too.

Dang, those are like 300 bucks. I could only afford an "Anytime Tools" kit like that from Amazon, still cost over a hundred. You got good friends.

He's retired, so not so rich, drives a Honda Accord, about a 2011, so not a fancy kind
of person. Hell of a IPSC shooter. Finished about 6th place or 9th or something in the IPSC
Nationals back in about 86 or so. Quick as a rattler and more accurate.

Been friends a long time. He's a good guy, for sure.

Wealth is relative to ones perceptions.
Smokey, I understood the joke, no problems here.

Hell of a gift Bill. That is a good friend you have there.

I have an older set of Starret’s similar to that which go up to 12”. For holes over about 3-4” I like using them instead of telescoping gages and an outside mike. Darned handy to have when needed.

I've got that exact set, though about 25 years older and used in the production of oilfield gear boxes. Also have a Brown and Sharpe set of the same general range and a Starret tube set to 9". Really should of sold them and my other precision tools when I went into programming and left the shop floor. Been retired 2 years now and that stuff is just sitting in the tool box soaking up Starret oil. I don't do fleabay and there are no shops in this area anymore.

You're right about no shops in the area anymore, only thing I've found is places that work mostly in flat stock. Makes it darn hard to find round bar stock to use on a lathe. I did find some (3 pieces of round that in total wasn't over 3' in length) at the Ironworks in Independence.

For bores under 2" I'll use either telescoping gauges or Brown & Sharpe Intrimiks. For bores over 2" I use dial bore gauges.

Dial bore gauges are nice but short range and not cheap. If you were doing engine overhauls for
a living, every day, they would pay, no doubt.

I understood the first post, smokeywolf. No probs. Always good to poke a bit of
good fun at folks you know well. Especially the rich pharmacists. :)

We have done a lot together over the last 30+ years or so.

He has several free trigger jobs, and more on his side. We look out
for each other.
