Another Mauser

I made a deal ........a long time ago ..... I had an insanely cheap Santa Barbara Mauser action shipped to a smith for which he happened to have a take off barrel laying around . The bolt is a GI cut and turn the bottom metal has a hinged floor plate and an inside the bow release . It has a GI spring and magazine follower with a rather long single stage trigger I do have a 2 stage I can swap in . The stock was found out in the shop probably a take off from a an Interarms MKX 22-250 circa 1970 . It is just a plain straight grain walnut (American? ) with a rather plain double point border checkering on the wrist and fore end. The mount is a 1 piece bridge 4 screw mount of aluminum in the standard 1913/Weaver style . What better for a classic hoge poge than 1970 something 2 screw rings with a death grip on a post 4x El Paso Weaver. 20160219_172800.jpg 20160219_172800.jpg 20160219_173226.jpg Chambered in 358 Win.

She was fresh from getting fixed . Remmys father is a German shorthair ,.her mother is a 85# rottweiler. 60# of wired nose .....

I have several scope choices ,but opted for the most classic look. It also just seemed best suited to the cartridge until I settle on back up/primary irons .

I'm looking forward to getting it out to the range with a full range of bullet weights from 125-250 . The smith promised it was a half inch bbl. So I ought to be able to get it under 2" without to much trouble .

May I ask a question ( which may sound rather dumb)?

What type mauser action is used to make a .358 Winchester ? I thought they would be too long to work with a .308 size case
Thanks
Jim

I will have to build a block most likely to make it smooth. The MK X Interarms has a block in the magazine for 22-250 . The regular x57 will work with most of the 308 family . I have several bullets to try. I think it'll work with less meplat and or longer bullets. This Santa Barbra action is the same length as the much earlier Gew 98 it is relieved to allow for the Winchester Mag and 06' family . Pointy bullets make it easy to get the 308 family in and working.

308 = 7.62x51
6.5 x55
7/8x 57
06' = 7.62x63.

Anyway it still needs a little massage therapy I was waiting on dies and dealing a little, spent 4 hours 1 day digging in boxes looking for mounts ..... I only have 3 sets . I never did find them so then there was more waiting. The pistol bullets don't feed but 250 Speer SP seems to be happy . So I'll add a fitted block and put the x57 follower in the magazine and see how that goes extending the line of the feed ramp.

I really don't care about magazine feed ( shoot single shot) If I could change my 8mm Mauser98 to .358 Win would be delighted!

I'm changing the hunting tools . In a couple of years I'll be relocating from the land of site in for 200 and master 300 to you must be on a pole line or a freeway to see 200. Yes I know there's fields that long in Arkansas but more likely I won't have to ever shoot that far again . 32 Remington, 358,30 WCF added to 264 WM ,06' , 280 Rem.

West edge . Mena

Mena is where I first started looking at property in Arkansas, beautiful area for sure. Was a house a bit out of town on 5 acres that I really wanted but that was still 3 years before I could retire.

7mm yeah it sure makes some of the stable mates look shabby .

My folks are getting to the age where more and more minor bumps are becoming trips to the Dr and age is gaining on them . They have 2 places almost 25 acres total so it's not as if we would be in each others way but it's time for me to be 1.7 miles instead of 1700.
Nice country the bad storms seem to go around them (knocks on head) plenty of hunting and fishing close and better schools than I have here.

RB,

35 caliber seems to be a deer slayer in cast. 358Win or 35 Whelen would be my choice for a bolt gun, especially in a sporter 98 Mauser. I like the classic post Weaver scope. That's a keeper!
