Any computer gurus here?

Be careful which "Classic Shell" you download!!! I tried that right off the bat on this laptop and the version I got required me to do a total reset to factory defaults. If you can find it from a reputable site like filehippo it's probably okay. Don't just download the first one you come across like I did. Lesson learned.
Why would you go to a 3rd party source besides the Classic Shell page to get it? Filehippo? Why not www.classicshell.net that is the correct page.

A LOT of free downloads if you look at what you are clicking on, is not the real page, is not the real file, they are playing off people's gullibility to THINK you are clicking the link to download a file when in fact you are clicking a link to download or install something not even remotely close to what you were looking for. Looks like you may have been "had" by the same trick.

I would buy a new keyboard, should be under $20 and start there, Bret. And once you can get online,
try to find updated drivers - but watch out some scammers out there pushing fake drivers. And sometimes
there are no new updates.

In my case I didn't know there was a "correct page" to go to! You make a great point though, a lot of the time we don't know what we're dealing with. That's why I recommended a place with a decent rep like File Hippo. Kim Kommando also has enough of my trust to download from her site.

That's the plan Bill. My ex-SIL was great on this stuff, but it would be hard for him to do the job while I was beating him with an axe handle so I guess I'll take a crack at it.

Oh I can see the problem from here! Turn the ax around!!

If you google you can find a video of changing out the kb on your model, most are pretty simple once you know what not to do to get it apart..

Hey Doug or Bill, gotta anither question in Linux. I went to their site and was sort of ready to download but I don't see a real easy way on W10 to get the download direct to a thumbdrive thing. OTOH, I can buy a thumbdrive with Linux Mint 19.1 already loaded on it for about $10. In my Luddite mind, downloading that program (linux) onto the W10 drive and then transferring it to the thumbdrive sounds like a sure way to have Win somehow corrupt the files. And I had a terrible time trying to get the version I haev on a disc to load and it ended up being corrupted or something anyway.

Thoughts?

HI Bret can you download Etcher? It's the really easy way to get linux mint (or any other bootable iso) onto a usb stick. They have a portable version that you just open it and run it, it wants to know where the image is, go to where you downloaded the LM .iso file, on the right it should see your usb stick, just click flash and it runs, making a bootable usb for you. There are other apps like Rufus that run in windows, but it is not very user friendly.

Using Etcher, you download the LM iso to your normal downloads folder, not to the usb. Here is the link to the LM 19.1 Cinnamon edition, this one is the easiest for windows users imo.. https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=261 Scroll down and click on James Madison University it should open a box that asks you where to save the file, unless your browser is set to automatically download to a default download folder, in which case it should just start downloading to your puter.
