Sample Svarog slugs I received from another reader here measure .408 on the nose and .412 at the skirt, being .470" in overall length and weighing 110 grains. I am loading them with 7 grains of 231, NO WAD in .38-40 Winchester brass and trying them that way first, as .425" diameter pure lead round balls loaded similarly in .44-40 brass shot well in my cylinder-bore H&R Garden Gun with .420" muzzle. My Beretta FS1 pins .400" at the muzzle and I would size the slugs .402 to use in that while my Stevens 22-410 pins .388 and a .390 soft lead ball works fine.44-40RoundballIn410CYL.jpg38-40+390Ball.jpg

I picked up a couple hundred Cheditte hulls. None of the manuals use them. IINM they are a BPI product correct? I have a BPI manual coming hoping to find some recipes with these hulls. I was also able to find everything needed (hopefully) for loading.

The Cheddite hulls work OK but mine didn't last too many firings. I accidentally stumbled onto a method to shrink their oversized primer pockets a bit. If you are using a MEC loader, put the case into the priming station and bear down on it without putting a primer in. It does the same thing as the primer pocket shrink tool they sell. The Lee whack-a-mole tool will do the same thing. Don't know about others.?

Nice tip!!

I have loaded some of them three times now. Seem OK. Maybe not real hot loads but so far so good.

PM me with your snail mail address and I'll send some samples of il Grande Diabolo when the mold arrives. Already have your email to share test data. With factory .410 slugs now selling for over $2 per pop, we need affordable options...
NOE sells an excellent 4-cavity version of that. Mine ran a little heavy at 139 gr. but so much the better. 1500 fps using 15.5 gr. Lil'gun. Great accuracy using Win. HS cases. Same load but Remington SP hulls. 100 yds. Henry lever with Skeet choke. Velocity almost identical at 1575 fps avg. Hard to believe out of a smoothbore.
