Anybody Cast for 458 Socom

Quick question about QL; is this a buy it once and use it forever, or do you have to re-buy the program annually? I see on their website that version 3.9 is the current version and that there could possibly be data updates at a fraction of the program cost.
buy once and use it forever. However, sometimes they have some updates you have to pay for.

It is a very helpful program. I use it a lot when I am dealing with non traditional bullets for the caliber, experimentation, etc... or to cross check load data.

QL is a neat program. I like it for working with powders not listen in the manuals for a specific bullet weight. It isn't always spot on but does give a good start point. It is far better in rifles than revolvers.

Good to know fellas; I'll probably order and give it a whirl.
Still need to buy some heavy cast, say 400-450gr.

Lee C457-500F sized in a 458 sizer and case gauged with my slotted gauge. Fits snug but chambers nicely. Now to work on a load.
BTW, PC'd and it doesn't chamber.

Yes. I had to go .451 to get the noses to come out .4513 or so after coating and sizing. Bump them down until the front band starts to pick up a taper halfway, then they'll be perfect to load to magazine length in an AR.

I bought some RE 7 today from Pwd Valley, and get to drive over to Winfield and pick it up on Friday. Hope to be shooting subsonic 494gr (as weighed WC COWW) on Sat.

I tell ya, for the life of me I can't get these PC'd plugs to load and fit in my case gauge. I've sized them with a 458 Lee sizer/lube die; stuck them nose down in a 451 Lyman size die (about half through the driving band) and then resized them all with the Lee. The brass slips in and out of the case gauge effortlessly but when I meld everything together, the round doesn't fit. Lacks about 1/8th of being flush at the base. What am I doing wrong?

Look in the case gauge window and see what's hanging up. My guess is the seating die is allowing the bullet to get crooked. There is no room for error with the Socom, everything has to be exactly the right size and shape and all be straight or you'll have chambering issues.

Also try just a bullet in the case gauge to make sure it goes in easily all the way. See why I was so adamant about buying that little gauge? They're practically a necessity with this cartridge.

Amen to that. When I crimp, I crimp in 4 quadrants so as to aid in an equal crimp. I'll next put these on my concentricity tool and check runout. I did put the calipers to the loaded round(s) that were PC.d and they were uniformly .004" over. (.486 at the crimp)
The ones with traditional Carnauba Red lube fit just fine in the gauge, after sizing in a 458 Lee sizer. I'll keep after it till I get it right.

Just because you sized the bullets .458" doesn't mean they came out that way. If they're too close to .459" they won't chamber in mine.

.4585 on the lube groves as measured by calipers, but that might well be the problem. Sizing I mean. I haven't even tried to chamber any of them, and won't until I get them to slip in and out freely. Thanks for all your help Ian l'd be lost otherwise.
And a big thanks to everyone for there I put as well.
