I have been wanting a different caliber in this class and one that required a barrel
Swap It tops on my list.
I have looked at the 6.8 but never was a 270 guy. Olus I have a Grendel and these two are kissin ballistic cousins. Same for the 277 Wolverine its a 270...

This HAM'r has couple hundred FPE and VEL over the Black Out in same gun with same bullets. Puttin power right there with Grendel/SPC yet with larger dia bullet. (Remembering Im a hunter first and formost)

I made these functional dummies and about ten cases after 3-4 tries on 223 Brass setting trimmer and dies. All told 15-20 minutes time Without Ham'r dies.

I'm more of a 30 Herrett Rebated Rim fan myself ;) which is a 22 Nosler case trimmed down and necked up to 30 cal. The first picture is is of the 30HerretttRR taken alongside a 30 Apache cartridge (Another wildcat for an AR15) Its a ballistic twin to the 300HAMR. You can also make up the same case using 30 HERRETT dies and a 6.8 SPC case trimmed down if you have a 6.8SPC bolt. the 30HerrettRR is when you need to use a standard 5.56 bolt.

But then again, I also like my current AR15 wildcat project which I'm calling a .308 Kurz/7.62x41 (far right in pic alongside a 30-06 and a 308 Winchester for size comparison). Ballistic-wise, it beats the 300HMR and the 7.62x39 cartridge when loaded with 125gr bullets and is on par with the 30-30Winchester for ballistics and bullet selection (150-170gr). I use 7.62x39 AR Mags and a 450 Bushmaster bolt and I'm currently testing a 1-8" twist barrel although I may switch to 1-10" to do further comparison work with lighter bullets.

I added both the 7.62x40WT and 300HAMR to my collection and sold off most of my 300BO some time ago. Barrels are from Wilson Combat and I must say I’m very impressed with the accuracy outcomes even though it’s on a DI rifle platform. I have succeeded in crafting cast bullet loads in the WT but not the HAMR as the chamber is cut to very tight tolerances.

Before the current component drought I purchased 2K of each the 125gn Speer TNT Varmint & 135gn Sierra Varminter bullets at discounted prices and worked up loads for both of these in the HAMR and they perform well on feral hogs.

Brass for both the WT and HAMR is made using a modified Dillon power trimmer which trims the donor cases to length and then formed in the next step.

I'm using 300BLK barrels as donor barrels for my wildcat work right now so the twist rate is better for 150 and above weight bullets. I'll probably pickup a 7.62x39 AR barrel when the madness levels off again and they are back in stock to rechamber to my 308 Kurz wildcat.

I like the 300HAMR idea but I couldn't justify the cost of a Wilson Combat rifle

I like your .308 Kurz concept, Bruce. Only problem is a 36,000 PSI limit for that bolt face diameter. There is no free lunch.

I have the 7.62x40 and really like it.
Great for hogs and the Wilson barrel is really accurate! 0.75", 100 yd groups are common.
I make brass from the 5.56 rounds.
Be careful when u make your brass. PPU and some other brand cases are pretty thick and require neck turning.

Agreed, but that's also why I choose to duplicate 30-30 Winchester loads with that cartridge and bolt combination. If I wanted to replicate/shoot 308 Winchester loads, I use my AR10. The goal of this specific wildcat was to duplicate the Model 1894 in 30-30.

I agree, their rifles are nice but pricy. I just buy their barrels and I was lucky in that I bought them at sale prices before COVID-19.
