How much does that throat erosion have to do with what the bullet is made of verses the burning powder gases behind it? Honest question. 25k rounds is a whole lot of shooting.

For years my 'Default Alloy' has been 1/2 Lino 1/2 Lead. This is known as 'Taracorp alloy' and '92/6/2' blend.
For the past 5 years or so I have begun adding about 2% tin to my base alloy to get roughly a 90/6/4 blend. I have found that the tin addition casts better in Loverin molds with their small drive bands and grooves.

This makes a back-handed Lyman #2 alloy. I gotta say--Lyman #2 is a pleasure to cast with. Tin costs a bunch, but you can't take it with you.

antimony leaves dendrites on the surface.
those are little fish hook shaped thingies, they scrape at stuff till they are worn down or broke off.

anyway that's why you see a grey antimonial wash near the end of a rifle barrel.
a more balanced alloy locks up that free stuff and more Tin gets to the surface like it's supposed to.
one of the reasons why i went to a 4/6 alloy for higher velocity shooting.

This is why so many "hard cast" shooters freak out about the horrible leading that isn't actually happening because it isn't lead it's antimony wash ........

that or they start freaking out about their lube failing, or worse, saying it's running out... LOL.

Bob used AA5744 of two different makers, and I use A/Herc 2400. Both shoot at 1450-1500 f/s for accuracy. The other factor can be the glass in the primers, varied by maker. Like 22LR's getting a shadow after a couple of hundred thousand rounds.
