Ben's Red Instructions

I saw that Lucas has recently changed the Red ‘n Tacky grease from a lithium base to calcium. I wonder how that will effect Ben’s Red?

I have no idea. Ian may answer your question ?

Ca Sulphonate, not just "calcium", which implies calcium hydroxide. I have made basic wax/grease/modifier lubes with both types of thickener and didn't like either one at all for various reasons, particularly the Ca Sulphonate variety.

There is nothing magical about Lucas lithium grease, any lithium 12-hydroxystearate grease will do just fine for bullet lubes. The gimmick with most Lucas lubricant products is an overdose of polybutene that makes it sticky. Fiver and I played with polybutene quite a bit since we had a source from our own member Bruce here and it's sometimes a beneficial bullet lube additive, sometimes not. The STP has a pretty good dose of polybutene in it, too. You can source polybutene in the form of non-toxic glue traps for rats. A little goes a looooong way, the typical treatment for oils and greases is 2% or less.

Mystic red lithium grease is sticky, but not as sticky as Lucas and the dye fades a little more with heat if that bothers you. I'd just substitute that or whatever lithium GC-LB grease I had handy or could get cheap and not worry about it.
