Yes it does.

Every year as I get older, the enthusiasm for hunting grows less and less. Hardly did any this year. But seeing a tight cluster on paper or watching a clay bird break in front of me is better now that it has ever been.

Clay birds is something I have not done in many years. Crows still get most of my feather minded attention.

Thumb, Ruger #1 rifles often get little respect (explanation to follow), but the two that I know of (.30-06) were tack drivers with jacketed bullets. One of them had a 20" bull bbl. Mine is a 26" bbl. in .243Win. and will shoot accurately (<1 m.o.a.) with jacketed bullets and 1.5 m.o.a. with those that I cast (Ly. #245496, sized to .244"). For some of those rifles, the front end hanger is an issue, but that is an easy (and free!) fix. For others, it is worth remembering that Ruger had quality control issues with their barrels in the past. Indeed, C.E. Harris wrote that if you got one that shot <1.5m.o.a., you got a good one: You and I got good ones!

since i was 13yo, the one i dream about is a #1 in 7x57. i have 98 Mausers (Venezuelan and Brazilian) and i had the 98 mauser FN(g(ave it to my oldest son) and a 1916 spanish mauser('93 mauser). i consider the 7x57 is the finest cartridge ever made. (i can see thousands and thousands of guys/girls berating me of not choosing the '06. well, i killed my share of deer with the '06(and the 308 win), it rates somewhere between 20 or 30. not that i hate the cartridge, i had an '06 in rem a, b and cdl, rem mountain rifle, savage 110, and the rem m760. it killed deer like lightening, drt(except the 4pt which didn't go down with the 180gr rem pointed soft point, that was years ago). but favorite cartridge it ain't.

Yeah, I had the #1 7x57 itch too and scratched it well. I got lucky and had an excellent shooter with no tinkering. This tale will end as do so many in my firearm riddled life. A dear dear, long term, now departed friend wanted it and told me which Grandson he would bequeath it to so I knew it was never coming back. I sold it to him anyway. Sigh.

I'm a fan of it too. I've had a few over the years, never really could warm to any of the rifles, never were trim and graceful like a 7x57 should be to me. Lucked into a nicely sporterized Chilleno a few years ago, not fancy and with considerable finish wear but fits me like a glocve and I have learned to like the cock on closing. It's a lot better cast round than most would think, at least mine is, and certainly a capable deer killer with cast.

That said, the .30-06 is my all time fave and that isn't going to change. Nothing covers as many bases as well and been doing it for so long, it's simply the best.
