I am running low on BE and thinking of switching to another powder. What do y'all recommend? This is for target ammo in 38, 44 Spl & 9mm. Thanks

The list is quite long: Red Dot, Promo, 700X, WST, Solo 1000, AA #2, W231, HP-38, as well as many others.

Thanks, I ve about decided on American Select. I will get 1# and try it. My only gripe with BE is that it is dirty.

that's quite a change AM select is right between red-dot and green dot. [leaning more towards green-dot]
it's a bit down the scale.
if your just looking for cleaner than bulls-eye the new IMR offering mentioned above would be one to look at for sure.

I just went the other way and started using more bulls-eye.

I have to agree with Ian, buy more BE. Another close one is Clays. Remember they have Clays in different flavors and the one is super fast. May even be faster then BE. Two powders I will never stop using, even if they claim to come out with something better, are BE and Unique.

Some call it "the Trinity": Bullseye, Unique, 2400, all outstanding powders. I second the Clays powder as a possible replacement... the older stuff is faster than BE and burns clean. I have a big jug of it here I'd part with if anybody wants a trip to northern NY.

If you're loading powder coated bullets, Titegroup & BE86 probably aren't your best choices. I prefer Red Dot or Promo, but have nothing against Bullseye, I just "fell out" of using it as a primary powder. I know Bullseye would be the last powder Ed Harris would give up for handgun calibers, and some rifle caliber reduced loads as well.

they attack the powder coating.
Hawk should have some Pics of his batch of BE-86 in the powder for 10mm thread.
my batch didn't have any issues even after about a month.

My reason for not trying to replace BE is there is not replacement for it. Clays has close to the same burn rate on the listed charts, however it burns very differently. BE and Unique both have extremely long burn curves for their respective "burn rates", which is what makes them special.

I posted some examples of BE , Titegroup, and Clays comparisons in a typical .38 special load here a while back. See the difference:

I like Tightgroup buy it is not for everyone. It is a very peaky and spiky powder if that makes sense? If you run a marginal alloy you are going to get leading with it.

Pics of BE-86 and how it reacts to powder coated bullets after just 48 hours in the BE-86. This is Smoke's Black powder coat.BE-86 PC Coated 48 Hours.jpg

No joke. Sticks to it like it was glued on. Titegroup and Longshot react like this to PC also.

I don't know that I have used 2 pounds of BE ever.
I like Red Dot and Promo for lower power handgun loads.
Might be that Paul wasn't a big BE used and he taught me to load?
