BLL ( Ben's Liquid Lube )

Considering that the Johnson's company has discontinued the liquid wax that I used in my initial batches of BLL, I realized that many bullet casters wanted to try BLL but were unable to purchase the discontinued Johnson's liquid wax, that started me on a search for a suitable alternative to the discontinued Johnson's Liquid wax . I'm fairly certain that I've found it.
I've been using this combination for over 1 year with results that rival the early Johnson's / X-Lox BLL.
If there is a difference in the " down range performance "
I'm unable to determine any difference.

Here it is :

The Lundmark liquid wax ( 32 oz. ) is $9.99 from Ace Hardware ( I had to order it online and have it shipped ( for free ) to my local Ace Store ).
The Alox is Lar's White label. Both containers are 32 oz.
This will make enough lube for a " bazillion " cast bullets.

Here is the formula to use when mixing Lundmark Liquid wax and X-Lox .
When it is mixed properly, it will pour like Coke out of a bottle.

I've also heard of people mixing it 1/3 - 1/3 - 1/3 with very good results.
I want mine to flow like water, so I probably use more mineral spirits than some would use.

For about $25, you'll have enough lube for " bazillions " of cast bullets.

No weighing, no stirring, no heat .
Just mix as per the instructions and you're ready to use it.
I store mine in an air tight glass jar.
I have some that is over 3 years old.
Looks just like it did the day I made it.
It will " settle out " with long periods of time and needs to be shaken well after several months prior to use .

Sept. 10, 2021 Steve left us. You are missed.
Glass is probably a good idea, I had a small Lee alox plastic bottle full, after several months the Johnson's part of the formula attacked the bottle, degraded it enough to make it crack when I was shaking it up.

Can't go wrong with glass as long as it has a metal ,air tight, seal for a screw on lid .

I use Sea Foam as a gasoline stabilizer fuel enhancer. The empty cans work splendidly for BLL and for acetone/ATF rust penetrant. I shoot a coat of rattle can light colored paint on the can and make a stencil of what I put in it. I drop a 40 caliber round ball in the can as an agitator ball.

I think I have 4-5 cans of the JLL I bought RIGHT before it disappeared! I THINK I am good! That and my lead supplies should perish about the same time! IF I live that long!

Thanks Ben, I'd given up trying to get a jug of Lundmark up here. So I ordered 45/45/10. But as luck would have it, shortly after ordering from White Label, the local hardware store said the were able to get the Lundmark LPW. Although it won't arrive until June 18th. International shipping laws coming to Alaska. The White Label will be in tomorrow.

In my opinion, what you see in the orig. post above is still BLL.
I'm not saying it is better than my original mixture, but in field testing,
it is just as good. When I look at the groups fired ( with the version using Lundmark ) and the condition of my bores in handguns and rifles , I can see no difference. Some people were willing to pay $50 - $100 a can for the Johnson's Liquid Wax when they realized it was discontinued by the factory.

I thought that was totally ridiculous.

Necessity is the mother of invention .

Some have called it Ben's Liquid Lube Alternate. I just call it BLL.

Nothing but thumbs up here.:cool::cool:No matter what you call it. I have heard about BLL since before I came here, and made your acquaintance.
Now, thanks to you for your efforts to reformulate.I can make it.:)

Working to find a good substitute for the discontinued Johnson's Liquid wax was my goal with all this work to make BLL affordable to any bullet caster.

BLL works so well and is so easy to make, and now that it is very affordable again , I think BLL will continue to be used long after I'm dead and gone.......................

I have a small amount of the 45-45-10 to use up...but do have a jug of the Lundmark wax to be ready to switch over. I am using more and more PC as well. Nice to have so many good options.

Yes, you're exactly right.

The internet ( for reloaders and bullet casters ) has opened lines of communication that would have been very useful for me in 1967 when I started all of this.........

The Johnson's is just another example of things that go away unpredictably. I got lucky and went to look for some when I first read about Ben's discovery. Home Depot was closing it out for a couple bucks a can.
The difficulty is in predicting, "what's next?" I think we have already seen one example, wheel weights and lead in general. Still scroungable, but don't wait too much longer. Tin, well tin is pretty much already toast as far as scrap availability. Linotype, hah!
What else? Plan ahead boy's and girls. Somebody's going to love my estate sale!

I went looking for Johnson's liquid wax as soon as I heard it had been discontinued. But I was a little late in getting the word. It was gone from the grocery stores, gone from Home Depot, I found 1 can in the Lowes store in Panama City. When I took it to the check out counter they couldn't find a price for it. It had already been deleted from their computer inventory. They sent someone to look at the shelf where I got it from and found none so they charged me the price of a can of similar stuff on the shelf, about $3.00.
At the rate I use it it will last me the rest of my life.

Don't like storing any liquid in glass so empty cola bottle works fine. 2 yrs storage, same bottle, no deterioration. Air tight as I have to remove cap with channel locks. Shake well before using.

Just wondering When it's it beneficial to use BLL over top of Powder Coat and what is the advantage. Is this something that has been determined to be useful under certain circumstances, or just a variable that may or may not help.
