Brads Gas Check flaring tool for Christmas

Got a bag of gas check flaring tools for Christmas. He made me one for each cal that I shoot, and cold blued them. Slick little critters, with very nice nerling with his new tool. He made a couple of hammer hitting rods to open the checks as one of his first projects. They work, but are not as classy as what he turned out to use in a press. He takes a lot of pride in what he turns out.

Am also using the Little Dandy powder weight that he did for me, now that I have found the trick of bumping the charging knob a couple of times for consistency .. Works slick for small pistol charges, and for the small charges for PB rifle bullets even with the flakey shotgun powders. I still weigh each rifle charge regardless.

Get me a few 8mm checks and I can make one for them too.

Can't beat that!

I have one 30 cal mold that's a scootch fat on the base makes it a real pain to get checks on. I've considered making it a pb mold.

Some of my 30 caliber Lyman gas-check mould shanks are a little fat to fit Hornady checks. I discovered that a case mouth flaring punch from an old Lee Loader 38 Special kit did a perfect job of opening the check to accept those fat shanks. There are a couple other calibers I load for that present a similar issue, and once I'm up and running again with ammomaking I'll relearn which bullets need an assist of this sort. If memory serves, #429244 + Hornady is one culprit, but CRS Disease is rampant of late.

Thank you Brad. Very generous, and I'd enjoy having one. After hunting seasons close I'll have more range/fun time.

Al, CRS is a contagious ailment. However it seems to come and go depending on time of day! Sometimes have it two-three times a day.

Weather delayed it until today. Hopefully the postal service will get it there this week.

KH, there is an up side to CRS. Throughout the re-opening sequence of Al's Ammo & Alchemy Works I keep "discovering" stuff not seen for 18-24 months. It's like having Christmas 2-4 times a day. Or, maybe more like "50 First Dates". I dunno. Flying home late tomorrow, a great Christmas in Lynnwood WA with kids and grandkids. Just got back from seeing the new Star Wars Episode VII with that same crew, best of the series AFAIC. Grandson (11) got a Red Ryder BB gun under the tree, and watching him in action made all the travel worthwhile. He started on his third 500-pack of BBs--the tree squirrels that besieged his Mom's bird feeders have sought out less hazardous feedlots, and the smile just stays fixed on his face. There is a varmint hunter inside that young man straining to get out.

Check for a PM JW.

I wonder if this is something Al at NOE could make? I have little desire to start making this a business. Making a few here and there is good but once it is a business it isn't fun, it is work!

Contact AL/Swede by PM at his site. He knows that there have been a couple of threads here about them and may be interested. Tony

I've been sizing my gas checks for probably near 30 years. Would no doubt be a personal choice to do so but for me well worth the effort. They slip on easily with the check fully & completely flat against the bullet base and square to the bullet. No cock-eyed checks because one side of the cup dug into the check shank. They also crimp on tight when sizing even when using a nose first Star sizer with very little sizing. It is an added step but given the results it's little extra effort.

I started sizing checks years ago because of several SAECO molds I have, with some it was nearly impossible to get a check on and I even tried a hammer. Because of that I made 3 different types of check sizers over the years and now with the 30 cal sizer from Brad I now have 4. Brad's is easily the quickest & easiest to use of all of them. I think it would be a great thing if Al would begin making this style check sizer. How well they would sell I think would depend on convincing people the extra step is worth it. For my money it's a no brainer.

With a couple of my Lyman 30/31 caliber GC moulds/castings the flaring of the sides making square/proper seating a whole lot easier. It annoys me to have a nice, filled-out bullet get spoiled by an ill-fitting/undersized Hornady check. This is NOT a criticism of Hornady checks, 95% of the checks I use are from that firm. Tolerances differ between makers, and as hobbyists we need to address these variances to enhance our enjoyment of the pursuit.......a nice way of saying "We need to finish building a lot of what we use".
