Buck shot question...

Rally

NC Minnesota
I gave up on a full wad with buckshot. The wads get totally destroyed/distorted, and patterns show huge spreads, both vertical and horizontal. The wads show signs of gas leakage in multiple places and buffers don't seem to make much difference. The larger the buckshot size (space between them) the worse the distortion. I stopped all that, by using either a PGS or nitro cards against the powder, then fiber wads to get the height required for a good crimp. I coat my buckshot and and slugs with Ben's Red I've added beeswax to, after tumbling.
I'm casting/loading the Lee 7/8 oz drive key slug in 12 ga. You can find recipes all over the internet stating to use a 20 ga. nitro card under the base of your slug, but if you recover many wads, you'll find the same wad distortion/ and evidence of gas blow by. I found using a 16ga. nitro card actually forms a great gas seal at the base of the shotcup, and the wads show no leakage. Made a dramatic improvement of the accuracy with my slugs. I'm using ACWW + tin for alloy in both buck and slugs, and use a water bladder tank (to simulate a car door) for penetration tests. I'm using all imp. cylinder bore guns. Using all AA hulls.
