Case Neck Expander

My sizing die sizes my 30-30 cases necks too small. It is OK for jacketed but not for cast. I use the Lee Collet Neck Sizer. I have ordered a custom oversized mandrel for it, but it hasn't come in. I want a case neck expander to expand the neck and bell the mouth at the same time. I have the Lyman M die but I don't think it will do what I want. I also have a Lee die with "universal belling inserts" large and small. They will only bell the mouth, not expand the neck.

I have a NOE case neck expander for 35 caliber that is marked "Exp. Plug .359 X .355 P". I am not sure what it fits into to do its job. I haven't used it yet. I think something like this is what I want. Opinions please.IMG_0244.JPGIMG_0243 2.JPGIMG_0244.JPGIMG_0243 2.JPGIMG_0244.JPGIMG_0243 2.JPG
I still haven't got this picture thing figured out. I have a new app to size pictures, but I am still struggling up the learning curve on it. But that is another issue.IMG_0243 2.JPGIMG_0244.JPGIMG_0243 2.JPGIMG_0244.JPG

Rocky, after you insert the pic simply click on "Full Image", if you don't you get thumbnail size pics. I didn't edit the spacing, I only clicked on full image for ya.

This is the first photo of the NOE expander plugs I have seen. I would be interested in knowing how they are mounted and adjusted as well. I'm sure it is something simple, but I remain clueless.

I have the one but choose to use Lyman with 30p expander. Long neck. I use the flare tool for better control.

Lyman's "31" expander plug will work for a .310" cast bullet.

The NOE plug looks like it would give a .358" bullet .003" neck tension and .001" case mouth expansion.

I have both Lyman and RCBS expander dies and spuds. That NOE tool confounds me.
Allen,
If you are familiar with Lee's universal neck flaring die, the NOE plugs are used in conjunction with it. Just remove the Lee flaring thingies and insert a NOE plug. NOE's web-site has the entire list of plug dimensions, with the large number the case mouth expansion and the smaller number the neck tension.
Hope this helps.

I don't have any NOE expanders, I have some Lyman M dies, and some RCBS. I much prefer the RCBS, one die and several expander spud choices available.

At large, whereabouts unknown.
The NOE expander replaced the LEE tapered expander without any modifications. The depth is set with the die threads. The expander the OP has pictured is for 35 caliber, and would be about perfect if you're looking for .003 case neck tension with a .358 diameter bullet- .358 minus .355 equals .003. The larger diameter (.358) listed is for the step that's formed at the case mouth to allow the bullet base to enter the neck.

As was said, the NOE expander fits the Lee universal "expanding" (mouth flaring) die, but if shouls also fit any of the Lee "powder-thru-expander" die bodies and the long or short Rifle charging dies.

I made one for the .30-30 that also charges powder at the same time. If you have access to a lathe and chamber reamer t is a simple project. You can also get one if the Lee PTE die bodies or universal ones and turn down the spud you have with a file and drill press. I have no use for the strpped expanders and have waxed at length on the subject before. RCBS got theirs right.

This is what I’m using. It’s the Lee expander die, but the difference is the expander plug for .30-30. The standard .30 cal is too short for the long neck of the .30-30. The other Noe expanded pictured above (.311 - .315) is what I’m using for my 32-20.

I like the RCBS ones. Ian told me about them a long time ago and have used them on a bunch of cartridges. If I had a lathe I would be making these for everything I load in rifle.

I have always used the M-Die and sing its praises when ever the topic arises.

I have seen the RCBS and it would be same.

I picked up a LEE thru powder die when I bought this Lyman 8 Turret couple years back. Its worked OK.

I want to go with the NOE conversion pilots on the lee die as there are many more options for bullet diameter. Past "standard" that Lyman and RCBS offer. For instance My one 357 Colt has large throats in its cyl and for decades has been mediocre at best with cast. Some years back I tried some .360 dia and mike magic this gun "woke up". But the Mdie dosent open the case enough and can still shave the bullet if your not super careful.

I use the NOE expander plugs. I love the fact I have a broad selection of plugs, so I can play with neck tension. The plugs are quite affordable, and so is the Lee die. I have a die for each cartridge, and play with sizing diameter/neck tension till I get what I want.

That is what I would like to have, expand, bell and charge at the same time. Is such a thing available to a person who doesn't have a lathe or the skill to operate one?

It seems to me that a NOE expander could be chucked in a drill press(wrapped with a strip of aluminum can), and be drilled with a 3/32” bit that was held vertically in a good drill press vise. Once this first centered hole was bored completely through, it could be enlarged and countersunk.
You might destroy it, you might break your bit, or you might make a tool that you could use for the rest of your life.

I have one of the Lee expander dies, haven't used it in forever. I'm sure you would have to drill out the top of it as well to pour powder through.
