When My son was about 6 we started attending Eastern Woodland Rendezvous events....the thing that was nice about the folks in attendance back then was, you can leave a youngster run around the whole camp without fear of something bad or somebody bad happening to him! All the children would make friends and traverse the whole camp and all the sutler tents. If the child was late for supper you could be sure he was having a good meal somewhere in camp!
I will never forget this one particular event ( Daniel Morgan's Rifle Frolic in the late 1980's) when he was running late for our supper together !

While I was washing the dishes he shows up chawing on a big piece of fire roasted beaver tail! He was kind enough to let me try it and it was delicious and tender. Later that evening he took me to his friends camp to meet him. He had two more cooking over open fires in woven green twig grids! He said he cooks then as long as he has them, and just shares with the folks that stop by!

When I think of it now some of my best friends back then were introduced to me by my young son and his young camp buddies ! Many are gone now but some I still talk to on occasion.
