Christmas dinner

This year we will be eating at home, just the me, the wife, and the daughter. Since she is home from college for the last time before graduating we decided to do pulled pork. She really likes it, it is easy to do, and we prefer the left overs to turkey any day.
Go the pork shoulder in the fridge all rubbed down. Tomorrow night after we get home from Khornets we will put it in the oven for the next 12-14 hours.

What are you guys having? We aren't hung up on traditions too much, at least I'm not.

We are having all of the wife's family that will be around over for a Christmas Eve party tomorrow.

40 some people...

Roasted brisket in the oven, and barbecued brisket from the Traeger.

Dutch Oven taters, and whatever everyone else is bringing!

Hey, which model Traeger? How well does it work? Does it have a computerized temp controller?
I have looked at them for a couple years and want some feedback before spending the money.

The Traeger is the Texas. MOST of the time, it is much larger than we need, when I put the briskets on in a couple of hours, it will be perfect.

I absolutely love it. Yes, it has the temperature control. The salespeople tell you that it is cheaper than gas or charcoal... they are lying. BUT the flavor is great.

I got mine at Costco during a road show, saved $200.

BTW, whole chickens and turkeys are absolutely moist and delicious...:D

she's doing well, joining adulthood and the conservative side of the republican party.
she's dragging her hubby in one butt chewing at a time too. LOL

they come over Sunday and we went shooting until we lost all the feeling in our fingers.
I got accused of cheating by shooting my own rifle. [dunno how that happened she gave the 44 to her hubby leaving me with my much older and much, much more shot 45 colt]
she may have been referring to me raising the rear sight on her 357 lever gun 2 notches when she wasn't looking.
this may or may not have contributed to her shooting over the top of the next 3-1" dots we were shooting at. :D

I'm having pie and Harvey's Bristol Cream Xeres after a toast of thanks to the Gods. Mebbe later some ham and steamed asparagus. Entertaining the whole family, all five of us, then going hunting this weekend IF it gets below 80 degrees.

Just my Ms ,MIL and the 2 live in grands . Kind of a lonely Christmas for us actually.

We have a 12# ribeye roast just in case the 6 maybes show but with the oldest girl in faux labor with a due date of 1/22/16 and the youngest working through as low man 1st yr and 800 miles away .... I don't think I'll have to worry about not having left overs .
The scratch pumpkin pies from the jack o lanterns ,odds and ends, cheddar scalloped taters and a box of Blue Moon to help dampen the sugar buzzed little girl shreecks of joy .

Just like Thanksgiving, I'm smoking a goose and a turkey. Turkey is 14.5 lbs., which is a little bigger than I like. I prefer to keep them under 13 lbs. Turkey's been in the brine for about 16 hrs. as I write this. I always have a clean pan under the goose so that once the drippings have cooled to point where it won't cause burns, I strain the fat several times through several layers of cheesecloth and store in a mason jar in the freezer. We will use it for frying for the next 11 months.

It's just 6 of us. Mrs. smokeywolf, me, boys, Mother-in-Law and Timber, "The Goofy Wolf".

*Posted about 4 hrs. after I wrote it.

Here she is after 14 hours in the oven and ready to be shredded.
The rub was a bit spicier than my wife likes but I was happy with it. Might cut the cayenne in half next time.

I'm really thinking about getting a pellet grill/smoker for this type of stuff. Anyone got one? Care to share your experience with them?

I surprised you didn't chuck that in the lathe to true up the edges first Brad.:)

I made chicken fried venison tenderloins for a snack moments ago. I would share a pic however, they've been disposed of.

My father has one of those electric smokers with digital display. It takes little pucks in different flavors. I'm in for anything coming out of it. I use wood or propane myself.

And it will be awesome. Good food and good company Rick. You are fortunate.

Awesome? Actually it was a step above awesome. Hate to get invited for dinner and make a pig of myself but what's a guy gonna do with a whole prime rib and an electric carving knife sitting there. Staring at you. Daring you to go for it. So I did just that and took all the wrinkles out of my shirt.

It truly was perfection. Thanks John & Cindy.

Tonight was Me The Wife And Son with his significant other. The 4 of us had a grand time. Game hens & stuffing,Roasted Bon Bon Squash, Mashed potatoes & Gravy and corn And a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc ...Great meal & conversation
Probably the most peaceful in many years for us. After dinner we just watched my cats show off! And had a great laugh at their shenanigans !
It always amazes me how when we have company they have to put on a show!

Started the day with a 9;30 a.m. showing of the new Starwars Movie, was excellent. Earliest in the day I have ever been to a movie. Home by noon! Wife fixed a small ham, mashed potatoes,; gravy, peas, her special cranberry relish, a biscuits, and peach wine from the Amana Colonies, and I ate a whole can of ripe olives. Pumpkin Pie & Red Velvet cake for desert (3-4 hour later). Great meal, ate to much as usual. A nice quiet day, like I enjoy having once in awhile. Started to load some 9mm with my new 4 hole lee, only to discover that I had lost/misplaced etc., the chart for the powder disks. Have plenty of 9 on hand, but have about 1000 empties that keep telling me they ought to be loaded.
