Cimmaron/Uberti 1873 44 WCF rifle - experience?

I went to an auction once with the intention of buying 1896 in 40-65 . It was heavy but you expect that from a 30" barrel .750 ish all the way out . They decided not to sell it as the other guns like a Marlin in 32-20 and it's companion SAA didn't bring big bucks only going for $2150 each .......that's about what they were asking on gun broker or whatever at the time ......... In hind sight I should have got a cop and forced the sale as it was an absolute auction with no reserve and they didn't change those terms before it started . If I had been the only bider and refused to go over $50 they were stuck for it .

PS: Anyone know how to 'date' the gun based on serial #?

Yours is a beautiful rifle. Many congrats!

Italian imports will have a date code stamped on them. It is a box with two letters stamped in it and on your lever rifle I believe it will be under the forearm. Once you find it, use this chart to find the production date.

I have an 1866 Uberti Sporting Rifle in 44-40 and it's a hoot. I stripped and refinished the stock with BLO and it came out nice.

It has the ladder sight and I really enjoyed finding a load and regulating the sights so it would hit "dead on" at 100 with the ladder down and the same at 200 with the sights flipped up and the slide bottomed out. I use both Unique and Swiss 3Fg and a 220 gr. bullet from an Accurate Molds mold that has a huge lube groove. These powders provide a little over 1300 fps and right at 1400 fps respectively from the long barrel. The small rear sight doesn't make for precision aiming, but it's good enough I suppose.

Hope you enjoy yours!
