Close quarters self defense

I have told the story before but:
Our insurance agent when I grew up was a WWII vet who walked with an awkward gate. He was a friend and schoolmate of my Dad who was also a vet. It seems that somewhere in Axis Europe he was stitched with Hitler's buzzsaw, a MG-42. He took 7, 8x57mm hits from his left thigh diagonally upward and across his stomach and torso to his right shoulder on the way to taking out that same machine gun and crew. For this he was awarded a Silver Star and the Purple Heart. Some folks are just hard to stop and harder to kill. The most we can hope for is to tilt the odds in our favor. Nothing we can carry is 100% effective.
