WOW Ben this boggles my mind !new PRVI brass is avaible from several sources for around .70cents apiece , even GB doesn't have any, I checked my stach and only found a 5 round clip of old mil surp and one round in my ammo colection, don't understand what happened to this fine old caliper. .70 cents is about and slightly less than all the other new calipers , 6.5 cred 6.5 arc etc

It seems rather sudden that so many things are so rare. Forever, '06, 308 and the 7 or 8x57 was the basis for so many very common and popular rounds. Even the 6.5x55 was thriving in the US and brass was available with no searching and no wait, but it AND the heavy bullets for it are pretty much extinct. That case and the x57 case were plentiful and very affordable. VERY few people I ever talk to have heard of the 7x57. I have a nice custom 257 Roberts on a 98 Mauser action I've tried to sell (cheap) at three shows now and only ONE GUY at one of the shows even knew what a 257 Roberts was! He and one other guy knew what a "98" was and one of them came back several times, trying to talk me out of the BOLT! I finally told him $500, which was what I had on the gun and a butt-load of brass before he stopped pestering. As it stands, it would cost that much just to replace all the brass with new - if one could find it.

For such ubiquitous case designs to suddenly be ditched, so quickly and so deeply, in deference to the new kids on the block speaks to the mass of the market which has overwhelmed us. Shooting sure ain't what it used to be.

This is extremely perceptive

The lack of components is more of an indication of the changes than a real shortage. Casings such as the 7 x 57 or 6.5 x 55 were never super common in the U.S.A. when compared against cartridges such as the .30-06 or the .308. However, there was always more than sufficient quantities of casings such as the 7 x 57 or 6.5 x 55 because even though they weren’t AS common as the other cartridges there were still Plenty to go around. The demand was just never that high, so the supply always looked fine.

The current situation has a lot of factors in play. Shooters are not generating large quantities of once fired brass, so the source has dried up a bit. Suppliers are focusing on more mainstream cartridges, so brass for the less popular stuff gets sidelined a bit. Reloaders are not expending primers at the same rate, so that effects some of the supply.

I’ll stay out of the politics because it doesn’t belong here. I will say that just today I was looking at the website of a supplier of used brass. They had lots of the common calibers, 223, 308, 45 ACP, 40 S&W, 9mm, etc. And the prices were not horrible for today’s market. I found it strange that they were out of the less “mainstream” stuff like 32 ACP or 357 Mag. – Those casings are far from rare, but the supply chain has been warped.

One of the beauties of a 98' Mauser is finding fired brass is super simple. It will drop the brass in your hand. With that said, I'll shoot the 7X57mm brass that I have on hand now with my mild cast bullet loads for a very long time.

I LOVE that about the fixed ejectors.

@Petrol & Powder , I think you have the basis for an enlightening article there. 1The magnitude of how skewed the market is right now is astounding. It's really NOT just that we're just a bunch of fuds living in the past - this is unnatural.

I think the development of a gun chamber that can finaly shoot 6.8 RSP Effectively and safely. Then the military taking on 6.8 RSP as the new General purpose round. For the Sig 6.8RSP2 machine guns and selective fire carbines. Ditching a lot of their .556 guns. To replace them and respectively being supplied a new ammo for the 6.8 RSP2.
With the ramped up production of 6.8. For the military and the black rifle craze.
Might be having something to do with the lack of middle road rifle brass at the moment. At least the new stuff.

Plus the calibers less pushed not going to be laying around as much.

The black rifle stuff, that the rapid fire guys are currently fertilizing the range with.Trying out their new uppers.
Seams to currently be 6.8 in all, flavors and 300 BO. Also the steel case 762x39 and 350 Le, which are selling dirt cheap right now compared.
At least from what is on our gun store shelves, and on the ground at our range.
Not the only reasons though.
Also coated steel cartridges are becoming a norm, over brass, at least what I can tell by what I see on the ground.
Like was said a lot of factors.

I bought the first 20 inch barrel Savage Model 10 Police sniper with the accu-trigger I ever saw in about 2001. The very first thing I did was take the ejector and spring out of the bolt. For a bench rest rifle, that is very good; fire the shot and open the bolt; case lays on the follower and you pick it up and put in the fired box; lay a new round on the follower and close the bolt.

Ric, if you jack the bolt just right it does that anyway. Savage 10/110 etc. case ejection sucks even when it works.

I'd like to throw in a wrench.
Several years ago I was looking for 264 WM brass . $48/20 loaded FC blue box and $1.25 ea for Hornady new 50 count . In 6 months of searching before I gave in and necked 7mm RM at 60¢ ea in Hornady 50 count I picked up 75 pieces and 20 factory 32 Rem. At that time it was still turn the rim and cut a new groove in 30-30/32 WS if you wanted brass .
I have about 200 1x 264 now in Win Super X and 30 Rem is cheaper and more available for new brass ........ Hardly makes any sense that a cartridge has readily available brass that hasn't had a rifle chambered for it in almost 90 years and the cult like 6.5 mag in an age of 6.5 new and shiny is hens teeth .
