Cummins questions

In WA, it now illegal to sell one. They will no longer register one so you can't get plates.

I looked for one of those cars when the whole thing hit.
I become a VW fan for that ingenious idea alone.

funny thing is in the 80's Chevrolet cars were famous for running like crap until they got hooked up to the computer for smog testing then they run just fine.
the scoop in the bulletin was a bad ground to the computer [completed by the scanning tool] but there was never an 'official' fix for the problem.

It always struck me a odd that, as with washing machines and toilets, everything in the US is geared to keeping California happy. Fine, don't let Calif have small, efficient diesel cars and trucks because they put a little more crap in the air. That's no reason to punish the rest of the nation!

California is the 5th largest economy in the world.
only the entire USA, China, Germany, and one other I forget [maybe Russia] is larger.
of course they hold some power in how and what is said or goes on a package.

Bret, here in the West Coastal states everything has to be California compliant. Cars, trucks, light bulbs and everything. Had a Jeep Liberty Diesel in 2005-06 for a staff car, it was great. 2007 she, the governor, said every car has to be hybrid or all electric and she got it passed that WA would only alloy CA compliant goods to be sold. Now the state voters have no debate or choice. Brad, if to political, you can just delete this.

The country you are thinking of is India.

And knowing that, Sacramento deliberately throws its weight about.

Just a fact, but like Ric said, if it is political please delete.

It's always irked me that the amount of fuel burned is rarely, if ever, factored into the emissions equation.
'Oh look, we can reduce emissions by 5%.' Of course the vehicle will have to burn 12% more fuel.
The upshot is, more pollutants emitted, but with the increase in fuel consumption it produces more tax revenues.

I won't comment any further, as this is starting rub up against politics.

Smokey, consumption IS factored in. It's called Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) and every manufacturer has to meet the current mandated number. I think it's supposed to be 35 MPG by 2020 and will be 54 MPG by 2026. If the manufacturers don't meet the arbitrary standard they get fined heavily each year.

Ian, let me put it another way. When CARB ordered Chrysler to reprogram the chip on my Cummins in order to decrease emissions by 3%, did they also take into account that it increased fuel consumption by 10%?

You guys have got me going now.
When I bought my 2016 Chevy 1500 Silverado, it had a "Cool Air Intake" that the dealer installed. It was already on the truck when I looked at it and they said they couldn't remove it. It has a big red filter that looks like a K&N washable filter. The deal on the truck was a great one, so I bought it.
I only have about 25,000 miles on it, but it seemed to look pretty dirty, so I contacted the dealership about how to service or replace the filter.
First three dealerships could find it in their data base. finally contacted GM directly and they said it was a special order filter from California and cost $128.00 plus tax! They didn't know if they could order it or not, because it was listed as out of stock.
No one at the dealerships or GM can tell me if it is washable or serviceable or just replaceable. The service manager at the dealership where I bought the truck just said "blow it out with an air hose and don't worry about it".
I contacted K&N and they said it was a special order filter and they cannot disclose any info on it. They also don't have anything in stock the exact size of the filter and I can not order that particular filter from them.
A search by the GM part number brings up a few order parts from parts houses at reduced prices, but no accurate picture or dimension to assure it's the correct part.
I'm pretty frustrated at this point.

They didn't care because you paid another 10% more in fuel taxes! It's a win-win for the State. I'd apologize if this is political but everything is politics to one degree or another, so until I'm called on the carpet I'm remaining silent in that regard.

Hawk, I'd request the dealer UNinstall the unobtainium filter and put it back like the rest of the trucks running around...on their dime. It's interesting that there's a little known Federal noise emissions law that technically prohibits modifications to the induction system.

I'd be happy if I could just find a paper filter that is an equal replacement to the red one.
You guys have me worried about the filter quality of the one that's on there now.

The previous owner of my Tahoe had put an Airaid system on it which deleted the OEM box and accumulator/muffler. Being cheap and not having any junkyards around to scab the necessary parts, I found a cylindrical paper filter that fit directly on the MAF sensor and lays in the spot the box used to be. Wix part number for the paper air filter is 46441, maybe that will get you by.

That is basically what I'm looking for, but I couldn't tell the dimensions from the web page.
I think the kit is: GM 84016022 Performance Air Intake
Part No on the Filter is 23231630
There are no instructions on replacing or cleaning this filter.
Are they supposed to be oiled, can you clean them and re-oil them?

Air Filter Style: Conical

Air Filter Length (in): 8.00 in.

Inlet Flange Inside Diameter (in): 4.000 in. diameter

Air Filter Top Measurement: 5.000 in. diameter

Air Filter Bottom Measurement: 6.250 in. diameter

Looks exactly like the K&N filters. The closest K&N I could find was RF-1027.
Summit has them for about $79.00.
I just don't know if I need to replace this one with a paper filter for better particle removal.
I want this truck to last the rest of my life.

I would imagine that the best that that filter can do is far below a paper filter, no matter how
well oiled it might be.

as long as you don't mess with the air flow reader you should be able to rig a box in from another truck.

I bought the air flow kit to get the adaptor for the larger throttle body and the larger flow tube.
then I modified my stock air filter to take the tube out the side of the box by hot gluing and screwing the bottom of the filter to the side and threw the rest of the red filter away.
if a cubic foot of air box and a 4" flow tube isn't enough air for a 1200 CFM throttle body then I give up.
