True custom grips are made with the gun present. To get the tightest fits, it is usually necessary to sand the grip blanks right up to the grip frame, which makes it necessary to refinish the grip frame or entire frame. This is why custom grips are normally fitted before the gun itself is finished. I went through this with a set of grips for a friends 3 screw Blackhawk. It had recently been nickel plated, so sanding on the grip frame was out of the question. Scott Kolar fit a nice set of marble cake walnut panels to it as close as possible without damaging the finish. His workmanship and patience with this project puts him in my top two SA grip makers.
Thanks Ric, I haven't ordered from them for a few years now.Be advised that Herrett's has not updated their website price list, or anything else, since 2004! When I called two years ago about a set that was listed at $122.00, the price quoted was $350 with a two year wait. FWIW
He does seem to have a little stock on hand, if anything there interests you. He had a sale going around January to clear some of his stock out, so it may be a bit picked over by now.Lone star not currently taking new orders...
I got a set of Culina's recently for my Smith & Wesson model 58. Very happy with them and they are right there in Springfield OR. Turnaround time was a month to six weeks.
