Dark side

Wife and I went to the dark side today- we purchased matching Glock 17s.

First handgun she has ever purchased, sort of a right of passage.

For those of you shooting 9mm in a Glock factory barrel what is Your preferred bullet size? Powder coated or traditional lube?

I wanted a handgun that I could knock around and not worry. Also like a 9mm over 45 acp at indoor range. I don’t mind losing some 9mm brass but hate losing any 45 acp.

Mine is not a 9 mm, but a 27 .40 S&W, and I have my son-in-law paint the 180-grain bullets I cast using his Arsenal mould.

The dark side is awesome!

The Glock platform has a lot going for it and if you ignore the misinformation about Glocks, you will find that it is an excellent pistol.

As for the bullets, I can’t advise but I will say that the 5th Gen “Marksman” barrels are sort of a blend between traditional Glock polygonal rifling and standard cut rifling. I like it, basically the best of both worlds.

These are both Gen 4.

I drove one of my .358+ bullets I use in the CZ thru the bore. These are powder coated. No problems found. Bullet measured right at .356 and showed no signs of coating getting scraped off.

I may try some of the loads I use in the CZ and see if they lead and how accurate they shoot. I really don’t like separate ammo for guns for The same cartridge.

Based on what I see so far I can understand the appeal. The low bore over grip will help with rapid recover as well,

The only really weird part of the Glock system is the striker. The striker is only partially loaded when the gun is in battery. The force applied to the trigger completes the loading on the striker before the gun fires. This results in a very safe system but it comes at the cost of a non-conventional trigger. It's not really a single action and it's not really a double action. It's sort of both.
Everything else on the pistol is very conventional.

I've never shot a Glock, I'm sure they are a great gun in that class.
I have a Ruger 9e, that is in that class...I am very happy with the Ruger's function and feel and was priced right when I bought it 5 yrs ago ($269), they released that model in 2014. I don't think they make that model anymore, at least there isn't any new ones listed on GB. I do see some used ones on GB for cheap...I guess they weren't very popular.

I load the MiHec 125 Penta Point, PC'ed, at .357" in my Glock 17's and 26's..
4.0 grains of Red Dot is a pretty accurate and economical general purpose load.

.358 diameter works well in most Glocks which gives you a clue that they gave generous chambers for reliability. Powder coat or tumble lube. For tumble lube Lee, 45/45/10, or Ben’s tumble lube all work. My choice is 45/45/10 because it seems to wok better with 120-125 grain bullets at 1100-1200 fps. Prefer Ben’s for any velocities below 900 fps. Dries quicker, no leading and doesn’t gum up seating dies and change seating depth. My Lee TL 9mm 125 mold drops them at .358 and I load them in .38 Special and 9mm as cast. Go back and forth between tumble lube and PC. My Lyman 356402 drops almost .358 and a dose of PC brings them right to .359. I let the case size them. Don’t use them in .38 Special because of the lack of a crimping groove. The Lee bullet feeds in Glock. SIG, S&W, Browning, and AR15 9s so it’s pretty much all I cast now.

Polygon Glock bores handle cast fine. If the lead
concerns you keep a new .38 bore brush on a rod and brush it out every so often. Those slick hard bores clean very easily. I’ve frequently fired 500-600 cast (and swaged) rounds without an accuracy issue. Mine is a Gen 2 with lots rounds through it. The trouble I’ve had was some over pressure factory loads that blew out through the web. Other than very sharp recoil and an odd muzzle report you wouldn’t know there was an issue. I can’t think of an auto pistol I’d rather have a case failure in.

Good evening
Our Glock 22 probably has 2000 cast rounds through it. We bought it used and have never fired a jacket through it. Just as accurate the last time I fired it as it was 15 + years ago. And does not lead with our home cast.

It’s OK Jim. I still have many revolvers. She needed a 9mm and this was a good choice. Fits her hand well and will be ultra reliable.

I do like the low-profile aspect of the Glocks very much, especially in 9mm. If only they were about 3/16" thinner in the slide they'd be really nice to carry.

Ian,
I suspect our frames are similar, and I carry the 27 (same-same frame as the 9 mm 26) in an inside-the-waistband Kydex and leather holster without concealability problems. It's a 1911 that I can't conceal as effectively.

The 27 is tiny....and still thick. 1911 goes in a Fobus hip holster or shoulder rig.

G27, obnoxious little brat of an unwed mother. I have to put my mind in the right place when we out. On a whim I put a G32 barrel on it, yep it sticks out a bit, a little more muzzle blast, however recoil feels actually civilized. Went into a LGS a while back, don't laugh, thinking about a G20, get a 40 and a 357 barrel for it, then find a new home for the 27. Well... 2 of the employees tried every which they could think of to talk me out of the G20 or any glock for that matter. Kept telling me I need to go with at the very least a Delta Elite, or still better, a Nighthawk. Well it's one thing when you can get your stuff at not much over dealer cost vs retail. Not sure if they meant well or were just thinking that I should be somehow impressed. I had never heard of a Nighthawk before and was not about to ask them, only to open the door of ridicule even further. Looked Nighthawk up on the computer when I got home, seriously, they were expecting me to drop 3K or more (sorry) on a pistol..... vs. 600 - 650-ish. I could wait for a sale(s) and get a glock in one of each: 22LR, 380, 9mm, 357 Sig, 10mm, 45 ACP/Gap and walk away with change.

I know, each to their own, some folks think dropping 3K on a Shiloh with a good set of MVAs is equally absurd.

Okay, I've decided. I shall continue speaking to Brad . It's not a SIG, or an FN, but we'll get through it.
