This is only the second year my oldest daughter has tried to deer hunt. An has yet to see anything. But this year i did mount a square foot of plywood outside her window so she could watch whatever came to eat the sunflowers seeds on the board.
We have hunted out of the same box blind for both years. This year i was determined to at least have her see a deer. I made a vow that the only way i would take one this year was if it was not possible for her to get a good kill shot.
She knew i have experience rattling for deer. An asked me to bring the antlers with. Being her hunt i didn't hesitate, and threw them in the truck. Sunday morning she was spending alot of time on her phone doing whatever ( i hate those things) So I figuring she was purty bored. So about 9 i told her to get ready i was going to rattle the antlers . An telling her IF they came, they could do anything from come running to sneaking in. I did my 1/2 minute of rattling i hung the antlers on their hanger and looked out my left window. I looked back to look out of the right window (its less than 3 minutes since i rattled) and wouldn't you know it. There was a buck at about 25 yards away walking North to South on our East side. And he was about 10 feet from being directly down wind of us.
I told her where it was and i was sorry. But i had to take it. Or let it get our scent and run away. She started to turn and saw the deer as i fired.
After the both of us calmed down. She turned to me and said. Dad you have to give me more time to get ready so i can shoot. I just thought. OK
The direction that the buck came from was the only route that she wouldn't have a shot. Unless i could have seen it much earlier.
Later that evening about a half hour before dark. In desperation i took out my coyote call. An gave some dying rabbit calls. In the hope that one was close by. But no luck. Tomorrow the wife will post pictures to prove it happened.
