The Arkansas 65+ Lifetime Combination License now costs $35.50. The non-expiring lifetime resident hunting and fishing sportsman's permit is $1,000.00. I'm not John but I have the 2017 AR Hunting Guidebook.

Thanks Tony. :D Yeah, I knew it was a bunch.

I have left the hide on when hanging them and hoboy is it hard to get off after a while.
it does a good job of protecting the meat though.
I also don't like it when the meat gets real cold while it hangs that makes it hard to deal with too.

That is true. The cold meat, especially if it has ice crystals in it, makes your fingertips hurt. I often wonder why I bother, but the meat quality is much improved so I keep doing it.

The easy way to get an old hide off is to cut slits and put an airgun nozzle in. Blows them up like a balloon. You can pretty much pull off the hide when loosened with air.

I saw guys in Wyoming "fist off" the hides while buck was warm. Then they would hang frozen all winter. The idea is to use your hand between meat and hide to loosen all over but for legs and spine, makes spring skinning easier. A buddy tried this (I have not) and said the meat was watery but red after the winter, it worked well.

it never lasts long enough for me to worry about getting one through the winter.
I think march is the latest I have ever had any left in the freezer.
if I had 6-7 deer to work with I'd maybe figure a way to hang it longer.
even if I am lucky enough to get an Elk to go with the deer it doesn't make it till spring.

I'll be eligible middle of January for the Kansas Senior Lifetime Combination license, $42 I think. Of course that won't do me any good for the Late doe season or the family late season pheasant hunt. I'll have to buy an annual license to cover the 2 weeks I'll still be 64.

On deer, we usually make chops of the loins, make 3 big roast off each hind quarter and grind everything else with pork, sometimes pork roast on sale or pork trimmings if we can get some from the market. The roasts are either cooked as is or cut into steaks after thawing depending on what the wife wants at the time. Been working for us for several years now.

So you need to wait until your birthday in Kansas? In Arkansas you can buy the lifetime license in January of the year you turn 65. I didn't know that and when I went in to Fish & Game on my birthday in October they asked what I waited for, said I could have bought it in January. o_O

If I don't make atleast 1/3 of a deer into dried meat. I get the COLD shoulder at Christmas time. The rest goes to steaks. The wife is one of those vegetarian's. So I get it all.

I questioned them and your not eligible till your birthday. Kind of sucks for those of us with January birthdays. Our late doe season starts Jan. 1 and the boys and I always head to western Kansas for a January pheasant hunt, so I'll end up buying the annual and then the Lifetime license.

As my meatcutter friend reminds me "Steaks are sawn, chops are chopped or knife cut". Most of our is chops, roasts and diced for stew meat. That will get bottled in pints.
We use that for open faced sandwiches and quick meals. I may smoke a ham off of one.
